Fouled Charcoal Canister (CC), is number one contributor excessive fuel tank pressure. Some pressure is normal. Which is typically not to much more than a short rush of air, when removing fuel cap. More so during sunny hotter OAT days and or ascending to higher altitudes.
Before replace CC. We need to make sure all system operating at peak (Cooling system, Engine, AT fluid temp, EVAP & air flow). Or we risk damaging it again.
We must also, stop doing things that flood CC.
#1 cause of the 2003 up CC damage (flooding). Is being flooded with raw fuel, by overfill fuel tank (Topping).
The Toyota/Lexus Owners Manual warns us. Do not add additional fuel after auto shut-off of filling station fueling pump handle (Topping). This warning ( I first read about in 2003 OM) when Toyota moved the CC to rear above spare tire carrier. In the 98-02 with CC in engine compartment, topped isn't an issue. I topped for 13 years in my 2001, every time I went to filling station. But even the CC of 98-02 age, and foul. Sooner rather than later, if all systems not working as designed. Eventually, all CC we need replacing.
Even filling to auto handle shut-off, on a hot OAT day with cold fuel from underground storage, without driving to draw down fuel from tank. OAT and radiant heat from sun (ground/asphalt, will expand the fuel in fuel tank. Even ascending a rocky trial, is best done with less than 7/8th a tank of fuel.
One sign of a really bad CC, that was over saturated with fuel, for some time. We'll get a foul chemical smell. Like fuel that has been in a closed gas can for years.
Again, start with basics, which begins radiators fins:
I've a 06LC w/192K I just bought. In reading history I found PO complained of engine temp raising when both front and rear AC on. Toyota Dealership diagnosed with clogged radiator fins. Recommended new OEM radiator, $600 for the US spec Radaitor plus coolant and labor. They should have added...
