I would bolt them in place to get the alignment, then weld them in. I'd worry about them shifting around .

And I would use Grade 8 bolts even for the alignment, I use them or 10.9 equivalent for ANYTHING even remotely critical.

No need to drill through the entire frame. Just use the original holes that the rivets left. Wrap some baling wire around a grade 8 bolt and fish it into place inside the frame using the access holes. Put the nut on the outside. It's way easier than it sounds and the shock mount is bolted one the exact same way it used to be riveted.

I cleaned mine up and welded it out, when, 4 years ago? Still hanging in there. Took about 1/2 hour and 25 cents worth of weld wire

eh, no, not really. When the rivets were set they expanded to tightly fill the holes they are in. No possibility of wiggle with rivets set correctly. Not at all true of bolts. No matter what they are sloppy in the holes by comparison. No amount of anal-retentive hole making will eliminate this because you still need some clearance to fit the bolt thru the hole. This is why they were originally riveted and not bolted.

I figure Mr. T riveted for a good reason. I suspect that such a joint allows a small degree of less stiff than welded so it doesn't try to tear up the frame rail. Which is why the backing plates between the F-250 brackets and the frame in my previous pictures. Trying to build in a little compliance and spread out the load.

No Cruiser, but did sell Patch and buy an '88 4rnnr. Though just yesterday I fired up searchtempest looking at 80's on CL.....
