Found my carb problem!

Got to putting the carb back together and the step in the FSM that calls for installing the Main jets. I hadn't seen those hiding in there so i pulled them and cleaned them. Saw the difference in numbers and the FSM didnt state anything but the color difference. So i logged onto MUD and presto, my mains, secondaries, and small venturies were all backwards. No wonder my smog registered so dang high! The said i was running about 4x too much gas through the carb and my mechanic agreed. Her is the pic i took after pulling the top of the carb off on the begining. Backwards! Thanks to all the help on this thread: https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/116760-venturi-color.html and https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/69239-slow-jets.html.

Intake Manifold Issue?

This doesn't look right, anyone else agree?

Your intake looks funny because at some point during its life, a crack developed in the bottom of the plenum. Somewhat common, the fix is to have someone weld it back together. Your intake had that crack develop and it looks funny because it was welded up.

Good work on the carb rebuild!

must be a re-paint.. never seen the rear vents painted before

the rear vents on one of my stock 60's are silver.....metallic brown stock paint on the body and silver rear vents????? original with 90,000 miles never painted
I think they came that way???? they appear to have. No black paint or plastic under.

weird, huh?

Thanks for the info GLTHFJ60, I wanted to make sure it was a common issue!

alaska60, My vents have been painted at some point. Funny, all the other vents were removed or taped it seems, but not those.

jeremiahm, you have a nice set of rides...is your double cab a '58 w/ OG paint?

I just sold my 1965 deluxe so my cruiser is now my DD and main toy. It was too difficult having so many toys.

My FJ62 did a good job pulling all three of my busses home. My '66 21 deluxe was towed from AZ to SoCal without any problem other than super slow through the passes but it never gave up.

It also pulled this '66 deluxe home.

Cruisers are definitely in a different class...how many here can say they've pulled their engine and tranny and re-installed and driven it all in the same day on their cruiser? I wish it was that easy on these beasts!:crybaby:

That wouldn't be too bad if you had a completely assembled driveline to swap in. It's only held in by three mounts.

ramble59, she was a '60. Sold her about 10 years ago. It was color matched from the fresh air vent cover that was in near perfect original condition. I will post before and after pics some time. It was thrashed. It had a 1776 and flowmaster tucked under the bottom. Interior was all stock except carpet and tweed seats (instead of vinyl) and all close to the stock gray. every piece was touched on that truck.

I think smog killed the beauty of the 3 point drivetrain GLTHFJ60!

Started old flo up, she wont hold idle, but I think that i will get that figured out tomorrow. Only a couple of turns and she fired. Very smooth up to 4000 rpms. I couldn't get past 1500 before with out lots of hesitation. I am thinking tomorrows test drive will be pretty awesome!

Got her running! Drove all over town yesterday and she feels pretty good, but not perfect. I am going to let a professional give her a final tweak this week and we will try for smog again!

Oh Yeah, got the carb cooling fan working as well! new wire to the temp probe under the manifold and viola!

I passed smog!!!!!!!!

Saturday was a great day, she is finally legal!

Thanks Freds, hope to come visit this year for some SOA parts!

Ok, life comes fast! Couple of updates, pics to follow.

-Good progress on the front bumper!

-Had idle issues, proved to be the idle circuit, have it running straight to battery and grounded on carb probelm solved, i think it is a power issue and not a ground issue as grounding it did not help, but power from the battery did, i am guessing old wires are to blame.

-Alternator died horribly last week. Orderd a chevy 94amp (couldnt afford 140) and will be installing this week!

-I am all ligned up for two recall fixes at Toyota! Replacing both the rear belts and gas tank. Parts are in i just need to get the Alt in so i can drive it over.

jeremiahm,

You are bringing us Split window aficionados outa the ranks!!!

Your rig is exactly the same model as the one I had, but mine was a singlecab. The third brake light on the engine door (without the bump for a license plate light) indicates a late model '57. You said it was a 1960, but us trained eyes say it was probably a 58 first sold in 60.

Mine was also originally Dove Blue, but since it was a complete make-over, I applied an early bus 2-tone method: Electro Automotive: VW Singlecab Pickup Truck Electric Car Conversion

Congrats on your 60 adventure and kudos for your fab skills. I'll look forward to more of your progress reports.

rchalmers3,

that is a cool single. I picked up the engine door because i wanted the third brake light. The thing was beat to death when i got it so it has some mix and match. i will post some pictures on my website and put a link up. it looks origional but had a 1776cc and freeway flyer. also tweed seats, monster tach and Flowmaster (in 1997)! Other than the sound it was all classic when it rolled by. I would be all over and electric single cab for commuting!

So I decided to go with the NAPA stock replacement alternator with a whopping 55amps! It was easy and that is what i needed!

That said, i picked Flo up from Michael Toyota last friday with her recalls done! Didn't cost a dime and i got a sweet new tank (lines, gaskets, clamps, etc.) and the rear seatbelt retractor fix, they added a half retractor sleve that almost comes all the way through the seat cushions. Works good so far, pictures coming. Below is what they did, the list of parts and the cost:
