I was told that the evaporator core for the diesel 80 series is different than the NA version.

Can anyone post a picture or explain the difference?

Here is a pic of an evaporator out of an HDJ81.

There's 2 part #'s for HDJ81 evaporators (looked up a '93):

88501-60020
08/1991 - 04/1993) 01/1990-12/1997TOYOTA LAND CRUISERFJ80,FZJ80,HDJ81,HZJ8187-14: HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING - COOLER UNIT
88501-60110
05/1993 - 04/1994) 01/1990-12/1997TOYOTA LAND CRUISERFJ80,FZJ80,HDJ81,HZJ8187-14: HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING - COOLER UNIT

Searching for a '90 FJ80:
88501-60030
01/1990-12/1997TOYOTA LAND CRUISERFJ80,FZJ8087-14: HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING - COOLER UNIT
01/1990-12/1997TOYOTA LAND CRUISERFJ80,FZJ80,HDJ80,HZJ8087-14: HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING - COOLER UNIT

Searching for '97 FZJ80:
88501-60101
01/1990-12/1997 TOYOTA LAND CRUISER FJ80,FZJ80 87-14: HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING - COOLER UNIT
01/1990-12/1997 TOYOTA LAND CRUISER FJ80,FZJ80,HDJ80,HZJ80 87-14: HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING - COOLER UNIT

Can't say if any are compatible, but they are different.

Dude @Crab Sack you're awesome, and @IanB coming in with the deets! You two are awesome.

So they are different between years, but it seems like the North American 91 model should fit my 91 HDJ81?

The part #'s are different between the FJ80 and HDJ81, I wouldn't count on them being interchangeable unless you've got that info elsewhere, but I can't say what's different between them.

@Crab Sack , did you get a replacement A/C evaporator for your HDJ81? I was trying to replace mine in my 1991 HDJ81 using 88501-60020, but this Toyota part is discontinued. On various IH8MUD threads some folks state that 88501-60020 is replaced with 88501-60030. However, if you go online and use 88501-60030 and use the interchange part number for a Denso (the OEM for this part) evaporator unit, it gives Denso 476-0062. So, I ordered a Denso 476-0062 from Rock Auto recently and found out the hard way that the 88501-60030 (aka Denso 476-0062) is NOT compatible with a 1991 HDJ81 setup! The overall dimensions of the two evaporator coils look almost identical, but the tube connection with the expansion valve is not the same and therefore this Denso 476-0062 cannot be used in a 1991 HDJ81...argh!

Was wondering if anyone else has faced this before? Do folks just go to a radiator shop and get their evaporator "fixed"?

I will update my thread post at Part numbers - HDJ81 a/c system to reflect this fact, hopefully saving other folks the trouble and hassle.

old thread. But I have a similar problem. I’m trying to replace the evaporator core in my right hand drive HJ 61. The only evaporators I can find online are for left hand drive vehicles. Evaporators have the exact same dimension but the tubes are on opposite sides and therefore won’t work. Does anyone know of any way to buy an evaporator core for right hand drive vehicle? I checked dense, rock auto, parts geek etc…

I checked on that...but no luck...so far
funny in that ebay pic the evap is oposite of what I need. that pic shows the typical left hand drive evap, and I need the mirror image

I think this should be in a separate RHD 60 series thread not piggy backed to a 1hd-t where people are typically 80s. I think it would make it easier to find and search.
