I'd really like more detail on this hole and and "some other things" Can you get pictures from him?

I assume your buying a long block, what they going for?

A little more than 4k

You can buy a used engine for less than a quarter of that

Yep burnt valve, here it is in post #47 Burnt Valve ...what to do now?
Would you like my paypal ;)

Nice find! However, I'll challenge that's not a complete-loss failure. New valve, minor work on the head or even a replacement used head and it's all good. Far from "I need a new crate engine" level of destruction, isn't it?

2UZs don't just fail. Ever. Sounds like something else occurred to cause the mechanical damage. Lack of coolant has and will kill a 2UZ.
Checked all fluids,I made it to a gas station but could only go adout 30 and still keep temp down and oil pressure up I've rebuild engines before but only 1990's and earlier.

If I had to replace pistons I'd have to do a complete tear-down ?

Until I see a picture of the actual damage I'm going to say the mechanic was just plain wrong. It's possible to ruin a 2UZ piston, I'm sure... but it's extremely, extremely unlikely.

******* ****

I'll Paypal somebody $10 if they can provide verifiable proof of their 2UZ suffering a real, complete-loss-enducing, catastrophic engine failure.

Well the cost is said to be ~$1K engine + $500 parts (non VVTi). Head (both) job with parts is maybe a little more. So to ones wallet it maybe considered a "catastrophic engine failure"

If your going to make me work for it, at least pay me 100 dollar bill if I do show yo "catastrophic engine failure". That would a Unicorn of sorts wouldn't it!;)

To be honest, there must be engine failures, surely. The only problem with the Burnt Valve link is that we didn't know the outcome, the op didn't post any updates.

This is why we need to bust kneecaps of people who post a problem, solve said problem and never post the actual repair.

I would consider 270k to be maybie half life of the engine. 2uz engines are built for reliability. Many reports of 500k engines.

I agree with @suprarx7nut 100%, many reports of blown engines only to find out there was something else after a second opinion.

Did your truck throw any codes when you were driving?

I am going to say running lean would burn down a cylinder if a wrong plug was used. if something was dropped into the cylinder during plug removal / replacement could also ruin an engine. When were your plugs last changed and can we see a picture of #8 plug.

Tundra 2uz engines of the same vintage can also be used as a direct swap I am told.
