My 68 came with only a front heater. The rear ports were filled with some sort of solder. I also remeber collecting a non-rear heater out of a junk yard. This would have been out of a FJ40. Never came across any 45 pickups in junk yard. While almost all FJ40 seem to have a rear heater by the later sixties I believe they were never standard. SOR listed two center consoles in the later FJ40s. One with heater and one without. After a few years of owning my first FJ40 I found a complete rear heater to install. It gets cold in Northern Arizona in the winter. But I can't believe it's as cold as it get in Montana. I remember many mornings while heading to my favor hunting area using the rear heater since the front heater was busy keeping the windshield from frosting/fogging up.

The metal tubes are also available with no "Y" for the rear heater. I might have a set.

no you dont!!! you sent me one and could not find another.... :D you find the other for me yet...

I might have a set of those single pipes, I'll look tonight, you will miss that heater in the winter, Larry

I never drive my '40 in the winter. That's what my '62 is for!

use the russell bulkhead fittings and just connect a hose or use the braided hose. at least you wont ever have to replace it again

Dang! That is one clean-looking set-up! I like it! :)

I Just bought my 76. the last owner said the rear heater kept blowing (what ever that means) so I have a Loop of hose for the heater.

so curous if I want to hook up a heater, how do they work. can you turn it off and on by it self or does it ocme on when your turn on teh front?

in the learning stages so bear with please. been reading for days on the long list of things I want do to, need to do if you know what I mean.

and were might be a good place to get a heater to attempt to hook it up.

Hey MTDewX8:

I'm not really sure what you are asking, but this thread relates to heater hose firewall fittings. You may have better luck getting answers to your questions if you open a new thread.

Where in Montana are you located?

The rear heater core is plumbed with the front heater core, so if the heat is running through one, it runs through both. The blower motor for the rear heater is activated when you select the blower motor to "HI" on the dash.

I would not keep that loop, as it should either go through a heater core or be blocked off. As it is, you have hot water leaving your engine, and then where the water should be somewhat cooled (from the heater removing heat from the water) before it goes back into the engine, you've got full temperature water going right back in. If your heater valve is closed, then you've got no problems, and you probably don't have a real problem as the only time you've got that loop flowing would be when the heater is on (and you probably don't have the heater on at times that the engine is likely to overheat), but still...

I would either look in the classified section here to find a rear heater, or you could call any number of cruiser shops to see if they've got any. On MUD, I might send a PM to 3_puppies to see if he's got one.

I am down here in Billings. My '40 is a work in progress, and I'm a rookie, too.

Sounds like you sort of have your heater short-circuited. Dan's answer should help you out. I pulled my heater out and sold it a while ago. I hope I don't come to regret doing that!

Good luck with it all.

the russell bulkhead setup is badass! you just made up my mind how I will set mine up! where did you pick up that setup?

when I nixed my rear heater, I capped off the Y pipe leads going to/coming from the rear heater. didn't use the rear heater much, as the fan rubbed in a spot, and it made a helluva racket. the heater lines, even though insulated, got very hot, and burned any passenger's left ankle that didn't pay attention to them. with no rear seats, and no intention of extra passengers, it was no big loss. granted that was a while back, but it seems to me that I had a separate on/off pull switch for the rear fan.

the rear heater itself is one of two things that is currently misplaced, ! not that I was going to put it back in, but I am pretty sure I didn't throw it out. heck, I've got parts, like the back cover of the tail lights, that are so far gone, you couldn't fix them. I was only keeping them in case I needed a pattern to fab some new ones. no parts get thrown out until the project is done! and then only if they are a complete basket case, with no hope of being repaired. after all someone else may be able to use them. oh well, if I find I find it.

if you guys wait for about a week or two i will take some better pictures for you. you will not be able to use the heater valve unless you can thread the end, hose clamps may not hold thight enough. you can get what you need from lowes or home depot for a couple of dollars. when i send a picture you will understand more. not at home now but i will do when i get there sorry. and yes they are great. my number is 3606075516 i guess you can call i will explain.

Ken, that would be very cool to get a better look at your setup. I'm not in a hurry, so next week is no problem. I'll be watching for it.

so where are those pics?

I have figured out my heater selector cable is not working for the valve or what ever htat thing is called done move either. so that is why I have heat going all teh way back to my looped rear heater area.
