Has anyone with the popular EFI setups like a Holley Sniper done it with dual tanks? My new to me 77 has an older EMPI 38 on it, an aux tank in the rear under the rig, an electric switchover mechanism and is running the stock fuel pump. I've been thinking about longer term going the EFI route but wondering about dealing with the dual tanks and plumbing the fuel return and pump(s). I have read and searched and didn't see any threads addressing this specific issue.

I ran an aux tank set up for years on my 72. Selector valve under the bench seat above the tranny hump. Regular electric fuel pump in the engine bay supplying the 2 BBL Rochester carb, no fuel return. Switch on dash to change meter to read front OEM tank or datsun rear aux.

For you I would guess you will need a pressure rated selector valve and a switch to control the in tank fuel pumps. Myself I would just use a cheap electric fuel pump to transfer fuel from the aux to the main tank.

There are a few ways, but I think the simplest would be to have the aux set up to transfer into the primary. Then you only need one of everything.
This would be the easiest. Pull from/return to the in-cab tank with your new sniper setup, and use an auxiliary fuel pump to manually transfer fuel from the aux tank to the main tank as needed. It will take a slight amount of attention to not overfill the main tank, but this would keep the system from getting wildly over complicated by adding the sniper.

With that setup, I’d look into a RobbMC PowerSurge to feed the sniper or whatever system you choose.

First, I’d read a lot of threads and decide for sure you need EFI rather than going back to a good stock Aisin carb setup.

Excellent. I need to come and see your rig at some point and discuss this in more depth. I'll continue to read threads as well. There are so many different opinions it gets quite murky and confusing. Nothing it happening anytime soon. I have too many little things to take care of before I start really changing anything major :)

To me, the benefits of the sniper are big altitude changes while driving and easy starts. My FJ60 with a carb starts every bit as well as my 40 with sniper but I do have issues when going camping or hunting at higher altitudes. That said, I think it’s also running pretty rich and I haven’t had time to mess with it.

I don’t feel you’ll see any power gains or mpg improvement with the efi like a sniper.

My son is moving to Moscow Idaho from the west side and this pic is of him and his Samurai at 9,000 ft near Challis Idaho a few weeks ago. That's the kind of stuff we're hoping to do. So the big altitude changes are one of the drivers of considering a setup like this.

I just did this set up last year with a fitech efi kit. EFI pump in main tank in cab, holley pump sucking from secondary tank to transfer it to main tank. I T’eed into the EFI return line port at the main tank and used a check valve to prevent return line putting fuel into secondary tank.

Used a momentary switch to run holley pump so it cant be left on.

Main complaint is noise of EFI pump in the cab is pretty loud but I needed the original tank to be “catch tank” as it has level sender, secondary does not.

Thanks for the information, makes sense! Simpler is probably better in this situation.

Some time ago when I had dual tanks, I was set up to transfer fuel from the aux tank to the main tank. A inline, electric fuel pump and flow switch were powered through a small control panel with a toggle switch for powering the system, an indicator light which came on when the pump was running, and a momentary push button switch that over-rode the flow switch to start the flow of fuel until the flow switch "made". Once flow started, the pump ran until the lack of fuel flow cut the flow switch off or until the power switch on the panel was cut off. No worry about baby sitting the pump to keep it from burning up when the aux tank emptied., with the option to do partial fills as well.

Thanks for the information and pics. How is the Fitech setup?
It works. Was pretty easy to install. And I have only 6-7 hours driving it in town to base opinion on.

Bought after getting tired of working on the holley 2300 on it I decided to try EFI. I am pretty holley knowledgeable but got tired of the bad gas and it sitting around causing me problems. Also wanted altitude adjusting aspect as I am in western Colorado and 4500’ -10,000’ is all in a days work.

Have hopes of tuning it to run really good. As delivered, it is a little slower than holley 350 2bbl, but not much.

The route I’m planning is to keep the Carter lower pressure pump and manual switch to deliver fuel to a ‘holding reservoir’. I’ve got a larger fuel filter for this purpose. I’m going to modified the outlet so that it draws from lower in the filter. After the filter I’m going to use an external pump to supply the TPI setup (SBC). :D
