I might be looking for a split transfer case to mate to an H55f 5 speed. I want a late (end of 85 on) split TC to make the job easier... Is there an easy way to tell the difference? When it's still mated to the tranny? When it's off the tranny but bolted together? When it's apart?

Thanks...

34mm vs. 38mm counter shaft diameters....

Do you have a T-Case now, if so what month was your '60 made. If it is after 4/85 then you already have the later one I think.

I just got done doing a t-case rebuild with my 5-speed install and it was not all that hard to do. You can get a seal and bearing kit from SOR.

I'll be putting the tranny and t-case in tomorrow with the help of a few mudder's

I have a late TC and H55 on my 7/85 FJ60.... but that's not the question.

I want to know how I can tell (by looking) if a split TC I am offered is late or early...

Just measure the idler shaft. It's 38mm 4/86 and later.

The earlier ones are fine as well.

I am looking for a "late" one because, I have been led to believe, that they make for an easier install with an H55, as opposed to an "early" split TC. Is that correct?

Mark,

Cruiser Outfitters Tech Page

It needs some blanks filled in, as well as some updating. If anyone has info to add please send it my way :D

Not necissarily, in fact the non-spacer units can be just as easy to use without always needed the tap and plug. I run a 34mm case (83' era) behind my H55F, no issues.

Mark:

I looked at Kurt's tech page and I now see what you are looking for. It looks like you might still have to TAP the hole and add an oiler cup.

Since I just did mine with what I think is a ~83' - 4/86' - 34mm idler shaft. Has oiler provisions. Has spacer bolt hole. (from Kurts page) I would like to know what makes the later ones eaiser.

Thanks

I'm not sure... it's what I've "heard" here and on the LCML. I thought it was the oiler cup and bolt hole issues were easier to resolve...

Not really. The later case is more desirable because the idler shaft is larger and the idler bearings are bigger. You do need to tap and plug the hole.

I recently tore apart a 4/84 case. It was cojmpletely set up for the H55f, had the casting/machining, but did not have the extra bolt hole that needs to be plugged in the later cases. It also had a spacer instead of the PTO gear. The 84 case was nearly pristine inside, even the bearings still looked good--at 200k miles. Now I need a project to use it in. Hmmmm.....

So this means that that particular TC was actually EASIER to set-up for an H55 because of the missing hole?

Remind me about the oiler cup... what does it snap into? Was that there in this case you mentioned?

I guess that's right, though tapping and plugging that hole is about a 5 minute operation.

The oiler cup is a little plastic cup that snaps into a cast area in the front of the front t-case body plate. And yes, the 84 case has the provision for the oiler cup. That oiler cup has a nipple that protrudes into the center of the 5th gear on the H55. Mr. Locksmith's pictures a few posts back show it pretty well.

The early cases don't have the slot for the oiler. (81- 82)

Agreed...

However, there was a thread awhile back here on Mud about guys running the H55F without the oiler cup, no ill problems on their behalf as I recall. I wouldn't risk it, but I really havn't spent much time analysizing the oilers purpose and function either. I do have a used H55F/38mm combo here to play with (spoken for btw ;)), might split is just to replace the seal and examine the oiler cup.

I was looking for a picture of the bolt-hole needing tapped just now. How nice to see it on a thread currently going on! Thanks gents!
