where’s that head gasket DVD again?

also, anyone have a purchase order or crib sheet or iPhone/Android notes of what they bought with part numbers or something?anyone care to share photos or scans with me on what they have for parts orders?

lastly, is there any printed material that complements the FSM on this? like was there an old man at one point that put together a written step by step set of instructions? anything in the Toyota TIS system on doing a head gasket? or FSM is the be all and end all for printed instructions?

i am going to look through what i have printed out here form the MUD FAQ and print out anything i have not reviewed from that as well.

THANKS

The FSM and million different threads about this topic should be all you need. You are not inventing the rocket engine.

We've been changing and documenting HG changes since the beginning of IH8MUD.

At a minimum, you need the following parts as a start for the gaskets:

04112-66036 x1
15785-66010 x3
15725-66010 x1

Everything else will be based on what else you want to do while you are doing this work. Start searching and reading.

thanks for the info. just wanted to see if i am missing anything.

anything in the TIS about this job by any chance? the FSM is a tad “skinny” on explanations but i still have to reread my mud threads to remember which are the most ordered for this.

personally i prefer a sort of step by step cheat so maybe there are a couple of good mud threads that really break it down.

also - can i ask if anyone knows of any good youtube videos on this onur?

thanks for the info!

TIS is nothing but the FSM in digital form.

There is a great youtube video for the HG done by OTRAMM on youtube. Engine is out of the vehicle, but you get the idea. I think it is broken down into 4 parts.

anyone have a list of parts that are “while you are in there” list of parts to replace in addition to the head gasket kit?
surely someone has a purchase order for this lying around somewhere?
seems like a very helpful list to have for 80 series owners.

Different lists for different people with different parameters for use and operation and different truck levels of MX.

Really depends on your particular situation.

There are recommended tasks to outsource: injector flow testing and cleaning, any machine work you get done, any cleaning you outsource, or any other assys you might have rebuilt at the same time.

Fact remains that every situation calls for a different answer.

Again, if you research the over 250+ HG or engine rebuild threads you’ll get a sense of what people have done over the past 15-18 years.

OK onur. THANKS as always for the help.
i /get/ this answer.
but surely someone has written up a “full boat” list. or purchased a “full boat” set of parts.
it is a lot easier and more efficient to have a list and cross off what you decide you don’t need after doing research than it is for everyone to make up a list for themselves.
i mean the counter-argument i imagine would be that after 250+ posts and 15 years it is high time we have a thread with a simple list.
granted it could run 2 pages but still i don’t see why this does not exist. and if it doesn’t exist in the forum someone must have something close to send in an email or private message.
i have this for my motorcycle after doing a top end and just have to grab a purchase order from my inbox if anyone asked for it.

While I understand the "use the search" function reply in forums, it is sometimes frustrating when you are new to a platform coming in and getting that. I have been a long-time member on other forums and sometimes you get sick of hearing the same question over and over again, but it is what it is. When you are new and search for HG here, sometimes you get threads from 2007 - and you don't know if new stuff has come into play since then to make the job easier, or maybe there are new aftermarket parts, etc.

Anyway, here is the list that I have going for my upcoming venture into pulling the head based on my own searches.

  • Pull head, send to machine shop and have them check for flatness/cracks, check valves (grind if necessary), and install new valve guides.
  • New HG.
  • Clean cooling system.
  • Upgrade power steering cooler.
  • Rebuild or replace power steering pump.
  • Replace all rubber (cooling hoses, vacuum hoses, belts, etc - including the PHH and FHH)
  • Replace fuel filter
  • Replace fuel pressure regulator
  • New valve cover gasket
  • Replace PCV valve
  • Wrap harness
  • Service Dizzy/replace o-ring
  • Oil pump seal
  • Fuel injector cleaning
  • Heater valve.
But, onur is right in that it will be different for everyone. I am planning on pulling the whole engine when I do mine. Partially because it will make some of the work easier, partially because it will be a good way for me to learn this platform, and partially because it will give me a chance to git in a clean things that I normally wouldn't be able to access.

American Toyota in ABQ (I-25 and Alameda) gives a MUD discount. Talk to any of the counter people (Antonio, Tom, etc.). Tell them I sent you.

that’s nice. thanks.

i’m working on a parts list over here with part numbers.

Unfortunately I'm about to do a head gasket. As @Onur stated, everyone will have a different list. My problem was the original radiator popped its top so I was in denial that it was a head gasket problem. I replaced the radiator and all the "while you are in there" stuff only to then confirm my head gasket was bad. My list consists of three different orders from Partsouq with some duplicates because of what I bought for the first repair that is duplicated in head gasket kit. I've also supplemented some parts from other sources. The descriptions aren't always the most helpful either.

I've spent a fair amount of time searching Ih8mud and other sources to help put the list together. Spent a lot of time on Partsouq looking up parts. If this list helps others then that is good.

I think the FSM is the closest you will get to step by step instructions for the repair. Many threads here provide a lot of good information but none are step by step. Otramm's videos are very helpful. My plan is to use all the information I've gathered and basically just start taking things apart until the head is free.
