Whats the deal with CARB approval? Sounds like a few guys here have gotten burned.

I can assure you Doug Thorley headers for the 2UZ-FE/100-Series/LX470 are NOT CARB COMPLIANT.

Despite Doug Thorley stating, on their website, "...all Doug Thorley headers are smog legal in all 50-states'...these headers are not.

So in the state of California and any other state adhering to similar or same ARB regs these headers should be labeled "off-road only".

Nice.

It would be nice to hear from Mike/DT on the subject...but not much of a guess why we haven't

What say you Mike? I really thought the DT products were a great option for the LC 100 crowd. Is there a plan to support those who have already bought the headers?

I am curious to what will happen with their supporting vendor status. I feel it should be suspended and their ads pulled until they address this issue.

We know and are aware of a Carb legal situation that is currently happening with our 100 series headers. We are actively working to rectify this as soon as possible.

1. Vehicles are passing emissions portion of smog testing, they are failing the visual portion and that is were the EO# comes into play.

2. As stated in our installation instructions we are CARB PENDING, We have submitted for the EO# but are at the mercy of the state to which includes other unforeseen reasons into which are delaying the EO# being assigned for both 100 series headers.

3. This does not effect our Cat-back exhaust system. Cat-back exhaust is clearly smog legal.

4. Of course once this EO# matter has been handled by the powers that be we will throw up posts on a regular basis and track down anyone we have sold these headers to and send them the EO carb legal number free of charge.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Thanks

Transparency and honesty are always appreciated...and valued.

Mike, a couple questions:

Its been about 2-years since Nick professed DT had submitted application for CARB certificate/compliance. Even at a governmental bureaucracy level its difficult to fathom 2-years for due process for approval on such an item.

Purportedly (C)ARB does not see/have your application in their system for this header and engine; can you elaborate?

Right now I'm looking at over 6 bills to get OEM exhaust manifolds and the heat shields bought. Not to mention yet another R&R of Doug Thorley headers...this will be the 3rd trip around this block to the tune of another day lost wrenching just to get my rig CARB smog approved...so yeah I'm more than a little perturbed at this point.

That is a ridiculous amount of time, even for government, I think you could get a stamp for a Class III firearm more quickly than that.

More information is absolutely needed here from DT, this group bought a lot of headers.

What does DT recommend customers do if they fail smog due to this issue? Just park their vehicle and not drive it until DT resolves the issue? Any chance of refunds being issued to customers who can't drive their trucks due to this complication?

A deposit and a can of this would be nice:

What about the issue on the cracked welds?

Wait to own a Title II item (machine gun, suppressor, etc) is about 8 months right now. It used to be 3 months.

Two years on an emissions certification is nuts.

What about the issue on the cracked welds?

I don't know how many of the their headers have failed due to cracked header material at the weld junction. But, given how fast mine and another person's similar experience I am aware of failed, I would guess it was more than a few.

DT did replace the older failed headers with the newer stainless steel variant including shipping at no charge; although I would expect the same from any high profile aftermarket parts company it was righteous just the same.

Fortunately I didn't have to pay anyone for install/removal/reinstall...only being out a couple days labor time of my own. I sure feel for the guys that had to pay for them to be installed...twice.

In California they actually look at the headers and match them to a list of approved items? Fortunately none of that here in Colorado. Have you tried going to another emissions place and maybe catching a lazy inspector? On my 80 I was turned away based on having 35" tires and went to another location

This does sucketh

^ Yes CARB (California Air Resources Board), established in 1967, requires exhaust headers to be certified. And if they're not certified then its a fail regardless of what comes out of the tailpipe apart of smog testing.

Its more than a little ironic given, for its vehicle class, the 100-Series/LX-470 & its 2UZ-FE is categorized as a LEV (Low Emission Vehicle)! Yet bureaucracy rules the day...and in more locales than Cal :frown:

So far I've not gotten a reply to an inquiry I made to the relative CARB personnel for further explanation...no surprise there

The OEM heat shields won't fit the DT headers. It wouldn't be that difficult to fab heat shields from sheet metal...if one had a brake and bender...I don't. Given how closely two area smog shops inspected the headers you'd have to make sure they were covered damn near 100% including the collector area...

Must be a big penalty for a smog shop to miss 'em...I've had less attention during colonoscopy procedures :D

at least there are drugs involved with a colonoscopy

You getting the emissions because you just moved and have to register your vehicle? If so, how long do you have till your current plates expires? I know you are suppose to register within 30 days
