Doug Demuro reviews the 80 series

His scale for rating things is absolutely retarded. Score of "1" for acceleration should mean that this is the absolute slowest SUV on the planet. Something from 1930's that cant even make it to 100km/h. Same goes for the other categories. He basically gives "1" of "2" to everything that isnt at the top of its class in that category.

The 80 gets 1 for acceleration because it's slow in general, not because its a slow SUV. His scale yields a 9 or 10 for acceleration for a sub 3 second 0-60 time, so that only happens with a supercar like a Ferrari or one of the fast Teslas.

There were a few goofs and Doug can be a bit goofy, but I think he got it about right. His scoring system tends towards consistency. I'm just glad he didn't lump the 80 in with the Lincoln Navigator. Based on what he said on his way through things, this review is likely to only enhance the 80's reputation and the value of our trucks.

Again, 1 should mean that there is NOTHING that accelerates slower. The score should correspond to how it ranks among the competition. If one car/truck/suv accelerates faster, it should have a higher score. He gives "1" to a lot of trucks that have significant differences in acceleration between each other. It makes no sense.

His review misses the whole point of the LC. He kept stressing how he "couldnt believe people paid 50k for that". Land Cruisers dont cost as much as they do because they are the fastest or have the fanciest gizmos. They cost so much because of the toughness and reliability. Its extremely expensive to engineer and build a car/truck that can be abused for decades in 3rd world countries and still be expected to operate reliably.

New 70 series start at over 50K for the very basic package, and have fewer luxury features than a $7000 KIA. Yet they sell just fine.

I actually give Doug a lot of credit. He is a car lover who has created a name for himself and developed quite a following. I think he comes across as pretty objective in his reviews, and the breadth of his knowledge is impressive, to me at least, especially considering his relative youth.
I also find his quirks (wearing 2 t-shirts, goofy affect at times, etc.), refreshing. He's just being himself, something we should all aspire to be comfortable doing. I tip my hat to him, both personally and professionally.

He has owned and driven a wider variety of cars than anyone on this website I am pretty sure. And if I recall he owned an 80 at one point. He's probably not a super expert in any of them (to Mud standards), and probably has a lot more in the future, but he has seen a lot.

Hilarious, but not unexpected, that 'Mud would get incredibly pedantic and butthurt when someone reviews their car without spending their entire life pouring over axle diagrams or on this website.
Lol hell yeah brother

Again, you're not paying attention to how he scores acceleration. If you have a 3 sec. 0 to 60 time, then you score high. If the acceleration is more like a 10 sec 0-60, then it's closer to 1. There's a cut-off number on accleration and everything slower than that gets a 1, including the 80. The 80 is lumped in with Yugos, etc because all are slower than that arbitrary number that Doug considers "sporty."

He does note at several points that the simplicity and ruggedness are what keeps it popular, plus those locking diffs. Doug values those, although I think the only time he may have ever used a locking diff was when he crushed the All-Trac with his Defender. His comments about the price have more to do with the pretensions to luxury than any lack of value. The marketplace has changed considerably since then at the high end. Look at the 200 series, for example, of how much has changed in term of what you get for your money. If I could afford such luxuries, I'd much rather have a solid front axle than all the electronic rigamarole, for instance, but I'm in an 80 becaiuse of that and it's relative affordability. And yeah, he should've mentioned the SAS specifically for why it's still so popular.

SNIP

Why is homeboy not sheltering in place?

Doug explained previously he had a bunch of videos in the can when the quarantine hit. He might burn through that backlog if this lasts long enough, but he works by himself AFAIK in what can easily be a no-contact arrangement other than picking up the keys for the subject at hand.

Click bait/Influencer Success= page hits/video watches.

He succeeded.

Bingo. The fact we are even talking about this video is evidence of that.

I'm not sure why everyone is so upset. Yeah he didn't know every detail of the 80 but overall I thought it was an informative video for the average car enthusiast. It didn't have any major errors. Better than every other review out there imo. Not sure why we are complaining about clickbait. Doug doesn't try very hard to get maximum views. He isn't misrepresenting the video with the title or thumbnail.
