Double keyed door knob or Store lock

I need to upgrade the security of my garage, there is window built into the entry door , there is currently only a door knob but no deadbolt. I am hoping to minimize modification to the door so I am looking to see if anyone has any suggestions for a door knob that uses a key on both sides. The only one I can find is a Schlage which goes for over $300 which is a bit steep. Anyone have a cheaper alternative.

Just keep in mind the possibility of a fire and you need a key to get out. It may not be an issue in your case.

Yes I have considered that but I can always open the garage door and it would typically be unlocked when I am home.

I know you mentioned that you were trying to avoid modifing the door, but it sounds like a double keyed deadbolt would be your best bet. They're not hard to install and you can get an inexpensive hole saw to do it. All the ones I have seen come with instructions and templates. I added them to the doors to my garage. Just something you may want to consider and should be alot cheaper than a $300 lock set.

That is my fall back and given that I can't find a cheaper version of the double keyed lock set I think the deadbolt is likely going to be the solution I end up going with.

If you are standing in your garage and want to go outside, does the door swing in our out?

If it swings in, a Pilgram Bar may be the easiest. Put it in place and walk out the overhead door and close it.

you can get and pull the knob and just put a dead bolt in that spot of the knob

Don't forget to reinforce the strike plate or the best lock won't do squat.

Also, have you considered putting plexiglas over the entire window portion of the door and screwing it in?

expanded metal with a million screws over an existing window works well too

This is the route I went - solid door with a doorknob and deadbolt. Might even be able to find a used door at the local architectural salvage / Habitat for Humanity / curbside trash pickup that works for you.

I just leave a set of keys in the lock when I am at home.
