Thanks again for the pics and the advice! Current status: I've gotten the (mostly) flat metal brackets, a Metra wiring harness, and the Sony XAVAX3250. Scheduled for install next Tuesday.
BTW I called CruiserParts about the "strange" brackets and was told that those are only needed if I was trying to reinstall a factory stereo....
