Hi All,
I'm interested to know what the hive mind thinks is the best, and best value, for a dual DIN, dual camera stereo replacement in 2024. I think I need a rear camera for safety reasons, and I'd like a front camera for the trail. I could live with just a rear, but if I'm going to install (another) aftermarket stereo, I think I'd like to have two cameras, particularly if I can switch the front camera on easily while on the trail. (My current stereo is a cheapo JVC I installed over ten years ago. It's fine, no cameras though.)
All responses appreciated.
Thanks.

I currently have Pioneer AVH-W4500NEX but got it when prices were nearly half this on sale. I really like it and the wireless feature.

I used to have Pioneer AVH-4100NEX (pretty much the same but wired). AVH-4100NEX - 2-DIN Flagship Multimedia DVD Receiver with 7" WVGA Touchscreen Display - https://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Car/NEX/AVH-4100NEX

In another car have Pioneer DMH-WC5700NEX where I needed a shallow depth but still double DIN size. I put this in here as the ‘glass’ is much nicer - feels more like a tablet. It’s the capacitive screen - not as nice as a true tablet but closer and better than the resistive face of the two above. The downside to this is you can’t tilt the screen nor remove the screen.

Pioneer rear camera is pretty good. I'm sure other aftermarket options too.
I think all of these models above have at least 2 camera inputs as not all do.

Pioneer will also take this - Sony RM-X4S remote (on eBay for $20, old 80's 90's product) and gives a wired remove option for volume and track forward/back. It’s nice for not having steering wheel control.

I used to use Sony ES only and wouldn’t have a problem going back to Sony but tried Pioneer a decade ago and stuck with it.
If I went Sony it would probably be Sony XAV-9000ES but would need to research it more. It does show it’s the only model in Crutchfield to have 2 camera inputs.

These head units have all gotten so pricey I feel like. And just keeps going up if you start adding separate amps and nicer speakers. I'd have no problem going with the least expensive Pioneer model. They have ones more expensive than these that have built-in navigation but that seems useless to me if you're using carplay or android auto for Nav.

I did have one with its internal SD card crap out. Sounded like a fairly common thing. It happened just outside of warranty. Someone on eBay offered a very inexpensive replacement SS card with the boot software and has been working well ever sense. It was only one of the three I had with this issue.

pioneer forum world says it was a cheap SD card pioneer selected that just didn’t last.

I recently installed an Alpine ilx-w670 with the power pack amplifier in my 80 series. Very happy with sound quality and apple CarPlay integration. The overall placement of the radio in the dash makes seeing the screen during the day damn near impossible. Its just too low and not bright enough to overcome the sun glare. This is true of most ANY radio you'll install in your 80 in the stock location. Polarized sunglasses make it even worse. I used the Alpine rear camera, although any cheaper camera would work just fine too. It only has provisions for a single camera, although PAC makes a nice switcher unit that would allow up to 4 cameras to work with any aftermarket radio.

At night, tho the radio is easy to see, easy to use, and works great. My only wish was that more modern radios had a regular volume knob or a wireless remote option. Steering wheel controls aren't easy to integrate on an 80, and it seems they don't make the old add-on steering wheels controls anymore (I have one in my old Ford and it works great!).

Installation is a breeze with the toyota adapter to make it PNP, and you simply unplug and remove the stock amp. The alpine power pack amp adds 45x4 power and it all fits in the dash easily. I added a small Memphis powered sub in the back, that sits between my fridge and the middle row seat. It's not gonna rattle the license plate at a stoplight, but it's got enough oomph to make it noticable. I installed new speakers in all the factory locations, and it sounds pretty decent for what it is. Definitely not an audiophile build, or SPL competition build...but enough to enjoy the music on the freeway and drown out the noise of a wheezy old 1fz screaming at 4500rpm up the hills and the drone of 37" tires.

Alpine are very nice.

Yes the angle is not ideal for viewing.

The pioneer I used has a removable face plate that also can be adjusted in small increments and remain that way. It’s tilted probably 15 degrees so the glare isn’t so bad.

Thanks for taking the time to post your reply. That's very helpful. I have the same perspective on Pioneer as a good value and good enough features/quality. I'll probably go that route. Cheers.

I’m happy with the l pioneer nex4400…been a solid unit plus has the added bonus of running gaemins powerswitch through it.
