I've had the gear for my audio upgrade for a while ( actually a couple of years..) and started making a set of doorpods a while back but I changed my mind and decided to attach the speakers to the door rather, using baffles. I managed to find a couple of earlier model 80 doorcards in pretty good condition and the bonus is they are the ones without the speakers mounted in the higher position so I could go ahead and mount these lower down where they would actually fit.. They are pretty beefy with a 72mm mounting depth..
I decided to use the old speaker voids for the crossovers and made up pretty utilitarian brackets out of some stainless stock I had lying around..
I then used some Stinger Road Kill to deaden the outer skin of the door while I still had good access
I made up some baffles using 15mm HDPE, I needed to double up on this to 30mm to make sure the magnets clear the glass comfortably
I then applied the Roadkill to the inner skin as best as I could and also wrapped the baffles in some black vinyl that I had.
This is how it looks right now.. My next step is to either modify the map holder to cover the speaker like in this thread https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/117407-my-solution-worlds-worst-speaker-location.html or to make a trim ring around the baffle and make the map holder smaller.. still not sure but I want to get the other door done, do the tweeters, amp and wiring then I can deal with the aesthetics of the door..
Having the spare door cards is a huge blessing and if I wanted to I could get it back to stock but I doubt that's ever going to happen.. I cant wait to get this done and hear what it sounds like..
