Agree .^^. That and flushing power steering with synthetic ATF, makes quite as new. Well almost.....

Looking forward to hearing how this turns out. I am getting close to the time to replace my second on my '02.

Oh Noooo... I've got ~20K miles left on TB, but I'm 18 months over time limit. yikes....

No worries. I'm about 9 years over time limit on my 2000 LX (84K). I plan to do my belt, water pump, t-stat, tensioners and pulleys. How hard are crank and cam shaft seals to replace? Some say they're easy some say hard.

I think I'm waaaaaaaaaaay over due on mine.
Truck has 94k miles, but 18 years old. All nuts and bolts down there don't seems to have been messed with so I'm assuming TB is OG.

Seals look easy in the non VVTi engine.

WOW 18 years, is that possible. Nice when included belt sticker is placed on TB cover, let you know it was done.

I went out to my truck this afternoon. I checked again (I've checked many times) for sticker/signs of a TB change. Nothing. I did notice that serpentine belt is not OEM/Toy/Mitsu.

I'll have to cruise back to my Lexus records. Last record of Lexus having their hands on it was at 72k miles.

Just an FYI, on my 2003 LX the timing belt sticker isn't visible until the engine cover is removed. Just thought I'd point that out for any people that may be looking for it.

I bought my 2000 LX with 219K miles. The PO claims he bought it with 30K miles. When I asked if he ever had the TB replaced he said he didn't think so but gave me the address of the place he had maintain the truck. I went there before buying it and they said he had oil changes etc all done regularly, but they had no record of ever changing the TB, serpentine yes, but TB, no. When I pulled it the teeth were in pretty good shape but the back of the belt was pretty significantly cracked up - like a old, old tire sidewall. So I did it all, both belts, all pulleys and tensioners, hoses, the T's at the engine rear, new anti-freeze, etc.

Wow.... 219k miles on a Timing Belt and perhaps ~15 years. I'm really interested in any history, like:

Has it always been in the FL.?
Any clue as to PO's driving style i.e. lite or heavy foot?
Have you every checked with Toyota with respect to service records?
How'd water pump look tight & dry or loose & wet? (keep it clean..LOL)
How about the cam & crank seals, any seepage?

Sorry for being such a PITA, but stories like this get me going.

Different car, but same topic.

I had a 2001 Toyota 4Runner (5VZ-FE - Non interference engine) with 165K on the original timing belt and water pump. I went ahead and had everything replaced at 165K. Upon inspection, the timing belt showed some wear and small cracks, but I can see why they last a lot longer the recommended 90K service. The water pump had no signs of leaking. My mechanic said he's seen plenty original Toyota timing belts with 180K-200K miles. In Texas, btw.

Yes, always Florida.

Not a clue as to style. All I know is he owns a small construction company - it was his work truck, said 4wd came in handy for wet work sites. He gets wife's hand me down - sold this one when he took over her old LX.

Looked online, nothing recorded since 2005, saw things like tires, etc., but no major repair/maintenance actions.

Water pump looked OK, zero evidence of leaks, but the neck of the thermostat housing (part with the larger o-ring) took me hours to get off - aluminum corroding together and all.

No seepage. The garage did mention they had fixed some oil leaks, but there was no evidence that anybody ever pulled the front of the engine apart. Valve cover gasket leaks?

There may be three different brands of spark plug coils based on the color of the lower part of the tower that fits over the plugs.
I think one of the rear heater hose plastic T's had been replaced as it was in very good shape while the other one fell apart as I was removing the hoses.
I cleaned the fuel injector butterfly and MAF sensor, but they didn't need much, someone had been in there before.
Alternator is pretty new (clean and shiny).

Basically no maintenance records were kept, but at $4K purchase price with the AHC, climate control, sun roof, folding mirrors, seat heaters, etc all working, I was willing to take the chance. I was scared to drive it with so many possible miles on the TB, so all I did was get it home (it was only 2 blocks away) until I was able to find the find to change out the belts, pump and pulleys.

Great info, thank you LB. No seepage is nice to hear. Amazing water pump held, especially considering the thermostat housing corroding.

Bye the way congratulations on a great score, $4k wow. I've only heard one deal even close to that before.

Welcome to mud.
