I was headed home Saturday morning, and the CEL came on. This is a rare occurrence for me, I can think of two other times it had happened.

Anyway I was on the freeway, going about 60 my exit was right up ahead I got off, came to a stop and the 02 LX 470 was running a little rough.

I drive a quite a few miles the rig has 218K , last week I had called about getting the timing belt done. Had planned on dropping it off this week.

Anyway CEL was on, then the VTS /VSS was on it still had power and I was close to home. (2 miles or so) I elected to drive home, assuming it was a coil pack. I had never had a coil pack issue, but have read up one 100 series problems and knew it was a possibility.

Made it home, and knew I had to have a car to get to work that evening. Called Enterprise, was able to get a car (elected to drive my 100 to Enterprise) stopped at the parts store on the way and read the codes.

P302,P304 P300 more than likely Coil pack issues I was thinking.

I went to Enterprise , picked up my rental and left my 100. Fast forward to last night, I was kind of chomping at the bit to get my 100 back. Figured I would get up early today order a couple Coil Packs from Toyota, spend my morning today changing my oil, replacing a couple of Coil packs, I have a new set of spark plugs sitting here would install new plugs for good measure. This way when I dropped it off at the dealer it would be ready for the new timing belt and water pump.

Got a ride to the Enterprise lot, started up the 100 and the lights were still on, as I was driving the CEL started flashing. I was assuming that the coil pack had totally failed. The car was still just running a little rough, had relatively normal power.

I was just taking it easy while going about 15 / maybe 20 MPH and it died. Dash lit up like a Christmas Tree, I spent my yesterday evening reading dead 100 stories. So I had an idea of where to start looking this morning,

Got up today hoping it was a fuse, however it's not bummed see the picture for more info.

It may not be as bad as you think as there is plenty of evidence on here that the non-VVTi motors ('06/'07) are non interference. Search for @jgray posts. A new timing belt may be all you need. Good luck and please report back.

Unfortunately, that is exactly what is missing

I was about 10K over on getting it done

How many years since the last TB replacement?

May of 2011 was the last belt

Oh wow... thats very unexpected. I always heard that most belt last much longer than that. I guess there is a reason Toyota recommends 90K or 7 years for TB replacement. Thanks for sharing, and hope there isnt permanent damage in the engine.

Im betting you had a tensioner/idler issue. These belts don't break unless something makes them break. I may be wrong, but I would bet serious $ that something caused it.

I believe you will be fine... all you can do at this point is dig in replace parts and fire her back up... I believe you will be ok BUT I hate that you ran it as much as you did with a possible skipped tooth before the total failure... think I would prefer a total instant failure... I have nothing to back this up... just a gut feeling...
btw... so far i have had good luck with the complete TB WP kits off ebay with the good parts... less than $300

Without digging up the receipt - I doubt the idlers and tensioner were replaced.

Quote is like 1300.00 with new water pump, idlers & tensioner . (this is thru the local Toyota dealer, they claim it's a non interference engine) The price for the water pump seems high at over 300.00 but other than that the belt alone is like 599.00 parts and labor.

I really like my LX- and unfortunately I was complacent in my maintenance but this has been a real joy to own. Basically change the oil regularly , add gas and go. Just pissed I put the dam belt off a week.

don't worry betting the motor will be fine. Just retime and do it.

yeah just did mine. they do last considerably longer than 90k i can vouch for that.

The belts will last a long time. It's usually something else that breaks that wasn't replaced. It's a litle but of extra money to replace the other parts, but worth it, especially if it's the second belt change.

You could easily spend 1300 at a Bay Area dealer for the service you're getting done, without a failure involved. So don't feel too bad about it. Just regular maintenance plus some stress and a rental car. And you;re good for another 90K (or so).

I had my timing belt grenade on me, and in my case(1999 LX) it was not an interference motor, despite all the info on these forums saying it is.

Good luck, I have at least 15k on my new belt without a hiccup.
