DOM or round tube, steel suggestions or resources

Hello all, Im looking at building a tube bumper.

I was just looking at DOM 1.75 O.D. round tube. The place had it in .125 and 1/4" wall.

The 1/4" wall was $290/ ten feet. The .125 was priced better but seems a bit on the thin side.

Is the pricing high due to it being DOM? Cause I dont have that kind of money to buy 4 sticks of 1/4 wall.

What are some decent and economical types of steel for bumper building?

Non DOM tub might be the way to go in a thicker wall as opposed to DOM I guess?

I think the .120 would be fine though, especially if you are using DOM.

Typically I pay about 290 for 20'. I'd say who ever you went to was charging way to much.

.25 wall is waaaay overkill for a bumper IMO. .120 wall is plenty for DOM on a bumper. leave the .25 wall for links etc.

Oh, and good luck bending .25 wall!

DOM can be 2-3x more expensive than HREW. For most, HREW is going to be fine, even at .120 wall for a bumper. But it IS weaker and will bend easier.

How likely is your bumper design to come in contact with rocks, trees, other immovable objects?

I would use .120 wall seamed tube hrew for a bumper. 1/4" is gonna be really heavy.

Not really a concern for rocks... But bush, trees or deer/moose at speed is the primary concern, though exit or entrance to muddy terrain will be in its expected future as well.

If it is cost friendly for HREW (half or third the price) then I may do that and allow a bit more gusseting and triangulation of the structure.

Ballistic Fabrication out of Sacramento has has 1.75" by .120 wal for like $8 a foot gets less the longer the length. I was quoted yesterday for a 48" and 54" stick shipped for $63 so I can build a back bumper.

And thats DOM or HREW?

Unfortunately most of the suppliers are closed weekends here.

The ones that arent are more like for the hobbyist, as such they sell smaller quantities at higher prices. At the prices you guys are paying it may pay to shop around more.

I just purchased a stick (20') of DOM 1.75 OD X 1.5 ID for $150 from my local steel yard. So your cost is way high!! I used 1.5" OD tubing for my slider and have landed on plenty of rocks and it is holding up really well. I would recommend that for your bumper IMHO.

I would also use this material, tensile rate is higher with more Carbon.

Your frame is 3/16th why not buy used from a metal recycler, find some 3/16 or 1/4. or better Stainless ?

frame is more like 1/8 and used tube is not going to be kind to the bender dies. stainless wouldn't be practical for a lot of reasons, cost being the most obvious. I think you have the right Idea to just go with .120 hrew, carefully plan the bracing, and maybe use dom in some of the more critical parts.

IMHO, HREW is the most cost effective material for bumpers and sliders... I just don't see the point of using DOM for anything other than roll cages and tube frames. Unless of course, cost is no issue

I disagree on the sliders. I have banged up too much HREW on sliders to make another set out of it. I've only scratched the DOM, no dents.

The tube on my bumper is DOM, but only because I had it available. HREW would have been adequate.

Just got quoted from Pattom Metal Work out of So Cal for 78.45 for an 18' length of 1.17X.120 DOM.
