Does a snorkel really improve vehicle performance?

Well if it can be proven that a snorkel increases horsepower than I might just add a second one to my ole 2H. :D

I would think that cooler air coming in from a snorkel is better than under hood air anyday, rule of thumb for sleds is 60 degrees higher intake temps if taking air under the hood of the sled. For my cruiser it is easily 60 degrees hotter under the hood on a warm day.

most LC pull from either the outer fender or the cold air from a duct above and forward of the rad ...
if disconnected then from the engine bay.

Ya, but still damn hot in there, I was out one day this summer, nearly melted my ARB compressor - couldnt put my hand on the fender or hood. In any even snorkels rule, it's a no brainer!

Wayne I need some synthetic winch rope - you know where i can get a good deal? min strength 25,000 150 feet., preferable with sheath.

i meant "i am going to be putting in an order for rope for 4 different winches", no winches.
my bad.

oh i see - what are the specs on the rope? I can get dyneema from china for about 4.50 a meter 7/16 25,000, probably cheaper for a big roll.

So I experienced significant fuel mileage gains after fitting a snorkel to my BJ60.

Truck weight pre snorkel was 7200 lbs with two passengers, it had all the armour and the big tires and the turbo and bigger exhaust and aircon.

Snorkel install gained me 24 km's extra on my first full tank after install.

I also noticed a gain of 32 km's when I removed the AC to make way for an intercooler.

With all that weight, my 3B still returned an average of 640km per tank after these two mods

Also read somewhere that for every 10 degrees in your engine compartment you loose one horse. Fresh cooler air makes sense.

The only time I ever got a speeding ticket with my 3B as on a cool, frosty and dry October day . I was pulling my trailer too. Diesels love that cool dense air.

I just installed a snorkel on my 80 (1HD-T). Its a little early to say but I'm pretty sure I'm seeing lower EGTs pretty well across the board. It will be interesting to keep an eye on this over some more trips. Any improvement in EGTs makes it worth doing in my book.

Also seem to be getting rather good milage since, but I'm still on the first tank from install so too many factors at play there. Another one to monitor.

This discussion returns periodically and we never come to a real conclusion.

As a scientist, if you use the word 'significantly', you need to back it up, which you did not (not a criticism, just stating the facts).
Something like running the same (long) distance 10 times with snorkel and 10 times without, at the same time of the day, same time of the year, same fuel, same truck weight. Then you can actually make a calculation and come to p-values.
I run a snorkel on all my LCs too, but was always too lazy to do the above.

I agree that the colder air might actually do something-but I just don't know.
I like the fact that there is less dust higher up. and the looks.
cheers,
J

Sure and we also have to take into effect relative humidity, temperature, recent service history, tread block size, same terrain etc. Age of bearings, whether or not the glass was polished and the paint waxed. Windows up or down and and and....

An extra +or- 20k was a surprise. Not even something I was monitoring for. Just my regular fill and trip odometer reset - like clock work for me

Snorkels add a bit to the vehicle's drag, which in itself would reduce MPG.

You can actually ADD to the drag of a Landcruiser?

I had a safari snorkel installed on my new 3.0 hilux. To be honest, no noticeable improvement. The only reason was installed is one of the roads I travel on is often flooded during monsoon season.

However, at 4 to 5am in the morning the performance of the engine vastly improves, cold air??

i will agree that cold air SEEMS to make a diesel perform better.
cold winter mornings with a vehicle that has been parked inside for the night (fluids are all warm) seems to run real nice.

Cold air is more dense ( contains more oxygen ) and all combustion engines like oxygen. :)
