Dizzy Swap (1 Viewer)

Ok gang,

I swapped a '68 Vac Advance into my '75 2F and am having trouble getting it to tighten down. I have the thing dialed in pretty close, but once I let go of the dizzy, the body rotates and the truck stalls.

Am I missing something, the '75 dizzy was held in place just fine. It kind of seems like this one is is smaller at the base or something.

The clamp is the stock "c" type that attaches to the block w/ 1 bolt and has a horizontal bolt that clamps the shaft of the dizzy.

Not sure about the pressue, I currently don't have the gages hooked up.

did you fab up a new fastener/bracket or did you use the old one?

i know that when i put an HEI diz in i had to make a new one. also, make sure it's fully seated, so you can still have some sembalence of oil flow.

noticed any other things different about the other diz?

Well,

If the distributor is not properly seated, then the end of the distributor will not engage the oil pump, and your engine will be running without lubrication...a very bad thing.. and could be the reason that the clamp will not tightening up...I would make sure that the distibutor shaft is lined up with the oil pump, and that the distributor is seated properly..

not sure about this, but is the diz shaft on the 68 longer than the 75?

that would make sense for the clamp not fitting, with the diz still rotating.

Can't say about the particular swap you are doing, but it sounds like the diz casting diameters are different. I did the HEI swap on my '74 and had to make a bushing to re-use the old hold down clamp. Made mine out of 1" PVC, but I'm not happy with it. You need to fab something to put between the diz and the clamp. If you have a lathe or access to one that is the hot setup, might try the PVC route in the short term.

You could stick a screwdriver in until it bottoms out on the oil pump. Put a mark on the screwdriver, then mark the dis. so you know you are getting it in far enough.
Like Steve said before, you may not be getting in deep enough to engage the oil pump.

Look at the hold down for a small block chev... I am pretty sure that is what DUI sent with my HEI. With a longer bolt, it works great...

These guys are a direct swap as are all TLC dist until the 1FZE motor. Clean the dist shaft where it meets the block and clean the inside of the block. Loosen the clamp all the way until it flops around then install the dist. When you think it is correct spin but do not start the motor. Check oil pressure. Usually, if it will not seat it is not in the oil pump gear guide. Once it drops in you will know it. Follow the manual or Haynes.

Ok guys, I took some pics of the clamp, but can't upload untill tomorrow(forgot the usb at work).

Poser, how do I tell if the dist shaft is lined up with the oil pump?

dd113, I have been through the Haynes. It isn't too helpfu.

I understand that if the dizzy is not engaged all the way then the oil pump will not be doing it's job, but would the engine run smoothly in this case? I mean, this thing is firing right up after a turn or two, idles smooth, and doesn't miss or backfire at all when reved.

Is it possible to have the dizzy installed well enough to behave perfectly and still not engage the oil pump?

I have had a ton of trouble getting my new pre-68
"dissy" from Nardek installed. Nothing wrong with the
dissy, just with me. The first push will get the distributor
hooked to the cam gear, but a second is necessary to
get the shaft aligned with the oil pump. Shine a flashlight
down the hole, you can see where the oil pump is aligned
and you can even stick a screwdriver in there to adjust
its position.

I haven't done the swap myself but I thought you had to change the dizzy hold down as well when using the non US(aka early US)

When I put a non-USA dizzy into my F engine, it came with the hold-down clamp that is pictured in the standard manual (key bolt). But I would swear it is the same size. Rgentry is right. Shine a flashlight down the hole to see how the slot lines up. Then, when you put in the dizzy, start out about a quarter turn from where you want it, because it will rotate clockwise as it goes in IIRC. Line up the slot (it turns easily) using a screwdriver so that the blade at the end of the dizzy is lined up with the slot when all of this happens, and it will pop right in. If the blade ends up at 90 degrees to the slot, it will prevent the dizzy from dropping in all the way. Things will run that way. For about 2 miles.

The clamp you got lookes a bit dicked up. Twisted or is that the photo angle? You should use the older style collar clamp not the newer style 2 level clamp.

Align the oil pump shaft with number 4 plug. Slightly forward of number 4 seems to work best. Stick the dist in with the rotor pointing straight, 90' to the block. As it slides in the cam gear will cause the rotor to turn to the left. Loosen the clamp all the way. It might help to install it without the clamp at first just to make sure you get it right. You will feel it seat into the oil pump gear. It is very possible to get it in and have it run just fine with no oil pressure. If yor gauge is not working remove the sending unit. Spin the motor and see if a bunch of oil shoots out. If it does it is engaged
