I'm trying to find a do it yourself rear bumper kit for an 80. I found the 4x4labs one but that is WAY overkill. I want something that has no swing. Just a steel bumper with shackle mounts and a 2" reciever. Does anyone make a DIY kit like that? I don't have the money to pay someone to weld it for me. My little welder and medium skills should be fine as long as all the metal is cut/bent for me.

I have a DIY 4x4 Labs without a swingout. It has everything you stated and you can add swingouts later if you ever wanted. Good price also.

X2, I did it w/o the swing outs first, then added them when I could afford it. You cannot go wrong with this bumper.

Sweet! What did the DIY kit cost? That would be perfect. Any idea on how much the total weight is?

I haven't weighed the bumper, but have weighed all of the junk removed to fit it. IIRC the junk removed weighs ~100lb, I doubt that my poverty pack, plain, 4x4Labs bumper weighs much more than that, so the weight gain isn't significant. Add the swings and it is a whole other story, them pigs are heavy!:hillbilly:

Several plain bumpers and someone was doing bolt on "wings" (Hefty Fab?). Just search

Hefty Fab gave up on us with their cool wings, may be redesigning, but.... I tried to get them to respond with time and pricing, it was not a priority for them about 2 months ago so I went with the poverty 4x4 labs Kit, will be finished this weekend with a couple of "Flank Mods" to it. I will install spindles that I already have to prep for swing arms later that I will fab up.

Okay. Thanks for the info. So what was the cost of the poverty DIY kit?

How much is the 4xlabs rear bumper???

Okay, so it $495. Not bad, but not great either. Now my final question and I'm almost afraid to ask. I want to get opinions about bumpers from a co. that is the Jeep world has a REALLY bad wrap. I ordered their WJ front and rear bumpers and their customer service and fitment were a nightmare, BUT the welding and design were top notch. Here we go: Has anyone used the Tactical Armor Group bumpers? There prices are WAY less then everyone else. Here's the link: and feel free to share any opinion you may have.

FJ LandCruiser (80 Series) | :: Tactical Armor Group :: Store

When I bought the front and rear WJ bumpers they gave me a 10% discount on both and gave me a great price for shipping since I had it shipped to a business. Again, the customer service, ridiculous wait time, and fitment were all horrible. I figured if I ordere from them again I will just triple the time frame they give me and try my best never to call them for help. That way I at least can prepare and anticipate the issues.

I agree. 4x4 labs makes a pretty darn hard DIY bump to beat. I love mine.

I'm working on my own DIY bumper at the moment (not to sell or anything of the sort) and have found my price to be around $375, maybe a little less. This is with a single, possibly dual swing outs. I'm copying to the best of my ability a known vendors high clearance bumper.
Some things to keep in mind though: I get good prices on steel, have access to a well equipped shop, and have found a place to buy spindles (rated @ 3450lbs) at half of what most recommended vendors charge.
My opinion would be to find some ideas on 'mud, and if you're capable, make something yourself. You'll learn from the experience and have something that you yourself created.
One last thing. I thought of doing the labs bumper, but I don't really like the looks, and a lot of people have complained of missing pieces. Luke makes things right, but if I've gotta deal with headaches, I'd rather do it because of my own errors.

Thanks for the info guys. I definatey am now thinking of a few ideas and possibly going with my own design. I think I'm gonna start a different thread to see what the 80 world thinks of Tactical Armor Group and there bumpers. I'm still keeping that option open, but if I have the same issues as last time or even worse I may just stay away.

There's been a few threads on tactical and none of them good.

Guess I should do some research first before I start a new thread.

I gotta drive over n get one of those from Luke

Info on the 3450 lb spindles please.
