I currently have a 9/71 40 with the original F engine. I have been building this for about 4 years and finally ready to start. I bought and installed a pentronix conversion and havent been able to get spark, not sure why. I have 12+ volts at the key controled black and yellow wire on the coil and the black to neg and red to positive but nothing. I decided to throw th points back at it to see if I could get some spark and noticed oil in the dizzy under the base plate. Now IM looking for a replacement dizzy. I see the DUI and FJ 60 but would rather not modify the side cover. Looked at the mallory 4764101 and it seems ok but pricey. Anyone have any input? Would like an electronic bolt in dizzy if possible. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the replies. I thought I read the later large cap dizzys needed a modified side cover with a relief. I will get with Trollhole, thanks!

The FJ60 "big cap" dizzy is the best upgrade you can get IMO; turns in ball bearings not bushings (like all previous small-cap distributors). You do need a dished side cover but they are not that hard to find; bought mine in no time off of Mud classifieds.

I though the big dizzys required the dished side panel. Ended up buying one from Trollhole. Thanks again for the input.

1977 Dizzy

I noticed you had a 1977 parts car, does it still have a distributor in it?? 1977 is the first year Toyota went back to Vacuum Advance, but before they went to breakerless ignition. A Pertronix in the 1977 dizzy is a home run!!!

No luck on the 77 dizzy. Someone had used the 2F before I got my hands on it. I recieved the dizzy from Trollhole and installed it black lead (white wire) to the negative on the coil and red lead (black wire) to the positive along with the black and yellow wire supplying power from the key switch and still no spark. I double checked the power getting to the coild and get a steady 12.XX volts. I though maybe I got a bad coil so I picked up an accel 12 volt universal coil and installed that thinking that had to be it but still no spark. I even pulled #1 plug and pluged it into the plug wire to physically look for spark and nothing. Is there something Im missing here? I've never put an old Toyota together but it seems pretty strait forward. I do still have the fenders and hood off to allow easy access under the hood so maybe its a ground issue? I have the engine to frame and frame to battery grounds hooked up, nothing to the body yet but my rear lights are working so I think that ground happened through the body mount bolts. Any help would be appreciated, Im trying to get it to an allignment/exhaust shop tomorrow.

That was it! Swapped the black and white wire and good to go. Now all I need to do is figure out why it doesnt want to start and backfires through the carb. Something to do with timing I think. Thanks Trollhole for the support and working with me to fix the issue. Hard to find customer supprt today so I appreciate it!

Good to hear! All you need is a timing gun to get it right. Mine backfired through the carb as well when i was messing with the timing.

I thought maybe its 180 out. I will have to make sure its on the compression stroke. It turns iver slow as well. That may be the starter as it looks original with the ND tag. Have to order one and give it another try tomorrow.

I went through the same scenario with back firing out the carb. Thought I was 180 out but it turns out I had the plug wires/ firing order wrong.

Sent from my carport.

I had the same problem too back then too I had the spark plug wires in the wrong firing order. I have a video I posted on the forum somewhere I you want to watch my carb back fire every 2 seconds.
