Have a 99 LX 470. Pretty close to “completing the build,” and have been holding off on a rear bumper, but I think I’m ready to pull the trigger. I have Dissent Front, Comeup winch, WK sliders, front and rear lockers, 34s, Bilsteins (ACH delete), UCAs, etc. As I’ve started to do more demanding trails (e.g., 6s and 7s in Moab), I’m more concerned with clearance than I was in the past. I absolutely love the Slee rear, but have read that it doesn’t have a great departure angle. Does the standard Dissent modular (not the new ultra high clearance) with swing outs have a materially better departure angle? Any opinions on one of these bumpers over the other? Really appreciate your input! Thanks!

departure angle is pretty similar. If you want better departure, the 4x4 labs or valley tech rear bumpers remove the crossmember and shave some inches off the rear overhang

For me personally: Dissent.
Reasons:
- Steel over Aluminum at comparable weight
- love the front and wanted to have the same style, color, powdercoat on the rear
- only hear very good things about Dissent
- many options on swing outs (but didn’t really check slee ;))

And I decided for the ultra high clearance version: already doing so much for clearance and protection, why not doing the last tiny bit more…

Getting it in 3-ish weeks and looking forward to it.

I have both. Slee is significantly easier to open and operate. Like night and day. I feel like I always have to manhandle and wrestle the dissent latches and shocks on the swing outs. Slee opens up like a door on a rolls Royce. Smooth and solid.

I chose dissent because:
a) no cutting of frame cross member (I believe a cut is necessary for slee....could be wrong).
b) swing out effort....not too bad, the ramp/friction pad is good.
c) comes in pieces...easier to handle on purchase end.....fit the entire box in back of my 100 (shockingly).
d) modular flexibility bailed me out.....no thinking bought the right hand tray. after the fact realized I needed the left hand tray to facilitate gas can fuel transfer to rig's tank. same with hi-lift mount (though, for safety reasons, probably will never mount it).

Negative: a sh*t load of bolts. You really have to think during one person assembly on how to apply the high torque some require (tough on older wheelers). Also, need to account for vibration loosening.....paint mark nuts/bolts and apply blue loctite (hard to remove, but can be done). Make sure to look at bolt markings every chance so corrective tightening can be taken before shaking apart.

I have both but the older version of the Slee. The newer version uses HSLA Alloy Steel which is higher quality/strength than mild steel. Also more corrosion resistant. No crossmember cutting on either. They are both excellent choices. The decision might come down to swing out choices and latch preference, availability and location (if you can save on shipping).

Another thing to consider, and this may have changed since I bought my Dissent bumpers. When you buy from Slee the stuff is in stock and ships very quickly. I remember I had to wait months without really knowing when Dissent would get around to building and shipping my bumpers. When you're out $4k+ its a little concerning. Also as someone mentioned the directions on the Dissent were vague and it felt like you're building a puzzle. Had to spent tons of time digging pictures online and making sure you're doing it correctly. The actual parts are super high quality just wish directions were included and didnt have to hunt them down on forums. FIY Slee doesn't require any frame cutting either unless you also purchase their high clearance/pass-through hitch option, then you have to cut a hole in the center of your rear crossmember which is still less cutting than Dissent requires on their high clearance bumpers that require the entire rear crossmember to be cut out and replaced with their part.

On my Dissent setup (front, rear and skids) I used no threadlocker of any kind. 4 years and lots of trails and highway driving later and nothing has come loose.

Only a select few factory bolts use threadlocker (lower shock bolts and some brake bolts I think, probably a few in the engine bay). If you tighten properly, I don't think anything will come loose. 🤷

Awesome advice! Thanks! Would anyone recommend considering the Dissent Ultra High Clearance to the list? If I went that route, I’d plan to carry my spare in the stock under bumper location for day to day, and then move to the rear cargo area if I was doing mode hardcore trails with lots of drop off ledges that would hit the tire (but that might look a little weird?). Totally different option, I suppose, but wouldn’t give the same look as the swing outs. And, to be clear, I definitely prefer the look of the swing outs, but the ultra high Dissent would definitely give me more departure angle. Maybe I’m overthinking it? If the Slee can handle the abuse of getting dragged off ledges, I don’t mind the scratches and scrapes, as those can be touched up with some paint but want to be sure dragging and scrapping wouldn’t cause any “real” damage (e.g., twisting the frame).

I've only had the Slee but it's been on the back of my truck for eight years now - lots of miles both on and off road. Zero complaints and it's protected my truck many times.

No regrets, Slee is highly recommended.

I'll second the ValleyTech. You can get the high clearance, where you cut the crossmember, or the regular, which is still high clearance. I've had it for a year, and anyone that sees it praises the quality and thoughtfulness that went into the design. Garret will work with you to customize, and I imagine it would save you a bit of coin over the bigger name shops, as well.

I consider Dissent to be at the very top of the heap (those welds!), but just Saturday I was admiring a brand new Slee rear bumper and that clamp system is a thing of beauty, it is the best out there. The other thing to note about Slee products is they've had a lot of time to work out kinks and make improvements over time, and their powdercoating is fantastic. I think it comes down to what design you prefer and which bumper meets your exact needs.

Slee for the win on strength and longevity period.

Jason has said it.

I prefer Slee because of the over build and construction. Also as noted above they have perfected the building and powder coating process. They also have the armor in stock if their website says its available. No wait times, no BS, ready to ship.

Yet its out of stock now. There's no issues with Dissent's MTO process. I've done it numerous times, as have hundreds of others on this forum.

OP, you can't go wrong with Dissent or Slee... you don't gain much asking all of us for our opinions. Try to go to a meet. If you're in CO and go to Moab occasionally, you should be able to figure out a way to see both.

There will be another option coming to market, but depends how long you're willing to wait. Might be a month or so. I'll be getting outfitted with the first one.

Slee is the best imo, although it is expensive.

You probably need to realign or adjust the swing arm then because the slam latch design is the easiest system to operate when installed correctly. Here's some videos that show the ease of operation and the alignment process.

Thanks for posting this. I’ll take a look at mine and see how it’s sitting at the moment. Latches aside the shocks are just too strong on the dissent. I’m not sure there’s any adjusting you can do with those.
