I believe the same thing goes for the Nat'l forest map app, download your area before leaving connection but correct me if I'm mistaken.

Correct. You can, and should, download the National Forest of your choice for offline use.

Since you’re on an Apple device you might check out this app. This is my main topo that I use with full maps built in and sat images with a data connection. The only bummer is to get all of NM you need both Central and Western.
