I've made the decision to delete my backing plate and need some help figuring out what length brake line to install.

I'm looking at the options on SOR right now but I'm not sure if they are long enough. (https://www.sor.com/cat086.sor?tabpage=tab3#086-ssbrkhose1)

My current flex hose is 7 3/4" long.

Can you point me in the right direction for brake line length? Also, are there any pictures you can share to show how your brake line is configured after the conversion?

Thanks!

Kevin

here is the long hose. ,old pic
everything has been cleaned up alot since pic was taken :grinpimp:

Curious- what is the benefit of deleting the backing plate?

They collect mud, sticks and other debris while wheeling and then eventually rot out.

Rather than cutting your expensive backing plate to make a spacer, you can get a kit from Mark A at Marksoffroad.net that includes DOT SS braided brake lines and yellow-zinc spacer. You could prolly sell your backing plates to pay for it.

Must be an east coast thing. In over 200,000 miles of fj40 ownership I've never experienced any of that with mine. But then, Colorado does not salt like Massachusetts and our rocks and sticks are bigger :-)

I think that's it... Used to be on his "specials" page, but I don't see it now... Forget if that price includes the spacer plates or not (I think it does).

Call Mark to verify. 818-953-9230. 1-6pm M-F. btw, Mark has those hoses custom-made to be DOT compliant.

Dunno about the rest of the world, but Calif seems to breed the perfect sized stones to get caught between the rotor and the backing plate at just the right moment to give you that butt-puckering WTF! squeal.

Backing plate eliminators are available from kurt at cruiser outfitters for $20. (I'm sure there's plenty of profit in that $20). The hoses are probably another $10 at your local auto parts store.

Marlin Crawler also sells the backing plate eliminators for $18, IIRC

On Claudia's rig, we kept the backing plates (don't see any reason to eliminate them), but lost the bracket/fitting/hardline. Used stock rear/center soft line from a FZJ80 to go from the axle housing to the caliper, worked great.

Finished the V6 caliper upgrade and backing plate delete. I ended up trimming the existing backing plates to make spacers since they were already pretty rough and the ducts were busted up quite a bit.

Check out the Frankenstein brake hose they had in stock at Autozone. The little rubber grommets actually rest on the shock at full lock. ...it'll work for now.

Yikes, that's one Rube Goldberg-looking brake line. Like tools above said: I can't see any benefit to not installing backing plates either, but that brake line certainly gives good reason to leave it as Toyota designed it and keep the hard lines.
