Differential oil seal replacement

Yes, I've searched the forums already.

I need to replace the oil seal at the pinon flange on the rear differential of my '76. Looking at the FSM, it looks like if I drop the shaft and remove the bolt, I can pull the flange off and maybe pull out the seal without having to break into the diff and deal with that whole nightmare. So, a couple of questions:

1) Is the above possible?

2) Are there any tricks to getting the oil seal out of there with the pinon in place?

1) Yes.
2) No. I just pop it out with a large screwdriver.

Check the outer pinion bearing for wear. Don't lose any shims that may come off with it. Also measure the amount of torque it takes to rotate the pinion with the wheels off and after you put it back together. If the torque is significantly greater, you may have other problems.
