1. 1996 FZJ80
2. 1HDFT 24 valve Toyota turbo diesel. H151 5 speed. Swap was done for previous own by a guy in Vancouver. When I bought it, it had been _abused_. I spend a couple weeks just cleaning and tuning and fixing stuff. Though I didn't swap it myself, I feel I could do this swap easily and quickly.
3. Everything just... fits. Engine fits perfect, transmission stick comes up in right place.
4. Well... if you want the wiring to be OEM, it would be difficult. But, if you were willing to wire the 1HDFT the way Proffitts wires the 4BT swaps... it would be super simple to swap.
5. Mods...aside from drivetrain, if any? - intercooled. fuel turned up. 3" mandrel bent exhaust
6. Driving impressions after the swap- "Wow" is the only safe for work word that I can think of. "Perfect". F***ing amazing!!! I was always turned off by the cost of OEM Toyota drivetain... but now I understand. It's heaven. The next time someone says they are choosing a 4BT because of cost, all I will hear in my head is, "CLACKA CLACKA CLACKA CLACKA CLACK"
7. Realistic fuel consumption after the swap. - I get 18 city, 22-24 highway.
8. overall difficulty of the swap: ** I mean... you can have the engine swapped out and the new one in, in a couple hours. Then you can spend all your time on the electrical, plumbing and making it look stock.

So silky smooth...

I think the diesel route is a great way to go. I'm wondering though, what are the ramificaitons for passing emissions? Diesels are measured differently and if the geniuses at the local emission station try to have a diesel meet gas engine standards, it just ain't gonna happen. Does anyone have any experience with that situation?

Some states have allowed a diesel transplant to be re-registered as a diesel vehicle. The only rule I have come into contact with are that the engine has to be from the same classification vehicle.

For example, you can't put a 6bt into an FJ80 because the 6bt was only offered in heavy duty 3/4 ton trucks, and the fj80 is a medium duty SUV. You will then have to find a diesel engine that was offered in a medium duty application like the mercedes or 6.2/6.5 half ton GM Diesels.

I only have experience with WA, CO and CA emissions though. I know that in WA they never even bothered looking at the engine. They wanted me to bring them a receipt showing that I filled it up with diesel, and not gas, then that was it. The smog test was easy to pass, I was WAY under the limit.

One related question .. ( or not . ? ) .. I'm planning a trip to USA in my HDJ80 .. I'm allowed to drive in USA my factory TD 80 ..?

Hypothetic .. if I sold my Marilu there .. it can be registered .. ?

I believe in CA the Land Cruiser is considered a Light Duty vehicle, at least that is what CARB told me when I called them. So even the 6.2/6.5 are questionable as legal if I remember correctly. Man, I wish I lived in another state!!

:smokin: I don't remember if I told you on the phone but I've got a 1HDT-FT/ A442 coming in for a transplant into an FZJ80 for a customer. I can't wait to get started. Hopefully I'll own one myself one of these days

To add to the thread I finished a 1hdt A442 swap into a 93 FZJ80. Posted in the 80 series section.

Just discovered this interesting thread. Awesome trucks!

No problem driving it here, but selling it in the US would be quasi legal, at best.
Here in AK, however, I doubt it'd be a problem. :D

but selling it in the US would be quasi legal, at best.

why .. coz I've seen ( read here in the forum ) many TD conversions running street legal up there ..

Probably because many of those converted trucks were either US trucks to begin with. If it's not an American truck to begin with, you have to meet the requirements of the US importation laws.

Good friend Ken did most of the work. engine was installed level, the tranny sits at about 5 degree slant due to the breadvan adapter plate.
1. 1994 80 series
2. 1994 80 with 4BT/NV4500/Orion. .
3. What went really well with the swap? - the end result.
4. What was unexpectedly difficult with the swap? - everything. not an easy swap.
5. Mods...aside from drivetrain, if any? - Intercooled, 3200RPM spring, H1C turbo with 54MM inducer. Boosts to about 22psi, 900F pre-turbo. ~95:1 crawl ration.
6. Driving impressions after the swap- Really loud at idle. And shaky. Would drive you crazy on the trail all day. once over 20mph, it's fine. And after new injectors, much smoother.
7. Realistic fuel consumption after the swap. - don't know. already sold it.
8. overall difficulty of the swap: ***** HUGE pita to install. To make it fit _right_, needed custom exhaust manifold cut from a 6BT, oil pan and pickup tube modified, floorboards clearanced for transfercase, and the NV4500 stick comes up under the dash (picture a SM420 in a landcruiser).
But it drives way way way nicer then a 4BT w/auto. 100x nicer.

All gauges work, including the tach. Luckily we had a Proffitts converted 80 to figure out the wiring from... otherwise... phew, good luck. FJ60 hubs on the front, fit perfect (pre-95 birfs are smaller).

This truck is now tan and driven by Jason?
I ran into him & family in Carrizo in it. It's LOUD but cool truck.

That 1HD is a nice conversion!

yup, when was it that they stopped offering the 1/2 ton trucks with a diesel? I'm sure they have stopped right?

a

That's the other sticking point in my mind. I don't know that answer either.

The magic combo for an FJ/FZJ80 in California then would be a post-'91 6.2/6.5 that was offered in a 1/2 ton (that was originally sold in CA, correct?

thanks dude .. got it .. that's why you need a US base ( frame and body ? ) to start with ..

Stone any updates to your original thread? Like mpg, issues etc?

Awesome thread keep em coming!
