Didn’t feel like working so went for a ride. One day I may make it it the end of this trail. I need to dig into elevation gain and track it out but probably 30 miles and 3k-4K elevation gain. It would be brutal.

Close like to get the old one off or to click the new one on?

When those quick links first came out, you could pinch the sides and squeeze the two links together to disassemble. Tool-free chain changes were advertised. But for this generation of chains I think it pretty much always takes a tool.

I had never tested a chain for wear and had the tool drop straight through the link space. That is, until a month ago or so. It was a very very expensive chain, and I had less than 750 miles on it. But I've been riding around doing a lot of wheelies, jibbing, technical and trials style riding. My conclusion is that 12-speed chains and wheelies don't go well together. So from now on, it's cheap chains only for me. Enjoy that lightweight XTR chain while it lasts. Make sure it gets plenty of Mazola lol
Click to get new one on. Dang it’s hard! I didn’t realize the quick link became so difficult to work with. And you’re right, those links used to be easy on/ off dealios.

I ride the XTR chain as I used to regularly snap the cheapos. Got tired of either fixing a chain or hoofing it out of the woods. I’ve only snapped an XTR once, but had a tool free link in my pack. I get about 600 miles to a chain and maybe 1800 on the cassette.

Took the 80 in for it's annual road worthy inspection (and also to work out if I need to get the swivel hubs done... yes...) and to get to work I lobbed the big yellow bike on the rack.

Pic of big yellow bike for reference:

Now I've done, it's got me thinking about how I use that bike - it's becoming my go to bike for nearly everything, and I think I'm going to start riding to work this spring and summer, as I'm not getting out riding as much with the little one at home - she's 10 months old, but not quite big and strong enough for the Burley trailer yet.

I'm thinking of getting one of these Minoura/Gamoh racks so I can just lob a bag with my shoes and a change of t-shirt into it,

It would just be useful to be able to drop things in and ride to and from work, and not have to bother with a back pack - it's only a 5km ride in, but there are some good bitey hills in there to just remind you that it's not straight forward!

I've used traditional rack and panniers before, but I'm not actually sure I like that as a solution - this feels more versatile to me, and also better suited to trailer duties in due course.
