From what I saw on SOR, the side ducts were an option from 8/76 to 10/84. Was this a dealership installed option or did you have to order from the factory? I'm guessing the holes were made at the factory prior to painting. I like the idea of the side vents but hate the idea of cut my dash to install them.

These were factory installed. While an option it wasn't one that had to be special ordered. These came on many new 40s depending on where in the country they sold. I wouldn't cut your dash unless you had all the parts in hand since they are NLA.

the side vents don't work as well as you think they will.
there is a lot of loss of air flow thru the small tubes that feed the vents.

seems there was the same discussion 2 weeks ago.

There was a conversation about this a few weeks back. There must be some foggy conditions out there. These defrosters only defrost a 5-7” round circle on my windows.

I'm sure they could be made to work. A lot of things to consider. The over all performance of the heating system. If performing as originally designed restricting the amount of air going to the windshield will force more out to the side defrost vents. Never had a 40 with them. Arizona was not high on the list to get this option. I have collected a few sets of these over the years. As I remember there is nothing to index the side defrost hoses they fit into the main windshield hose. Small hoses are made to block part of the larger hoses to catch air. The smaller of the size hoses and longer distance to the actual vent makes it challenging. It you really need the side defrost I'm sure it could be done and still use the stock vents.

I’ve never had them either. I wouldn’t cut a dash for them…. Prefer the dash without them.

In my ‘74 I find the no draft windows in the door, and kick out windows in the ‘81 hardtop on it work very well to keep moisture levels down. In the summer they also keep it cooler.

Now all I need to do is fix all the air leaks in the body and rebuild the heater and it’ll be back to being the sauna it once was. Especially with a 350, the front and rear heaters work very well,

I only started thinking about them because I have a set of tubes off a parts rig, but no vents. Since the general consensus is it isn’t much of a benefit I’ll probably just sell them. Too bad I liked the idea.

My 78 came with them and I was quite happy with them coming from a 71 Bronco. They worked pretty well with the rear glass vents also cracked. SW WY had very cold winters when I bought mine.
