De-Bling 2000 100 with Plasti Dip

I just got my new Hundy and I just could not handle the Gold Bling Package. I did a forum search and found some suggestions and I went with the Plasti Dip.

I decided to take the grill off (three screws...top of grill) and two clips on the bottom (left and right). Very simple.

Items needed:
-one can of black Plasti Dip
-rubbing alcohol (to clean the grill...drys very fast)
-paper towels
-painters tape (cover screw holes...really not necessary)
-several Coors Lights
-staging area with good lighting

I wiped down the grill for about 5-10 minutes and started spraying light coats about 20-30 minutes apart. I did 5 coats. The can says 3 should do it but the nooks and crannies of gold Bling were still showing. Also the thicker the Plasti Dip the easier to remove...if you don't like.

Some of my first coats were shot to close causing some discoloration. So I made sure my final coats were at a distance and consistent.

Next project: De Bling the rear letters. It needs a good cleaning since there is dirt and grim between all the emblems. I am going to leave them on (saw a tread on this). More pics to follow.

I watched a ton of videos. So I know if I change my mind I can just peal it off.

It will be interesting to see how this Plasti Dip holds up especially on front grills that get hit with gravel/road debris.

I did mine a little diff and instead used dupli-color GM storm gray, Dupli-color primer, and Dupli-color clear coat. Then used 3m emblem glue which is different from most that i've seen use 3m 2 sided tape. I passed on the tape because it raises the letters off the car and the glue put the emblem flush on the car.

Mine was a PITA but it looks sooo much better than gold.

From what I have read Plasti Dip holds up well. We will see and I will update.

In that regards, the other option is paint.
Cons:
-prep (cleaning, sanding, prep, etc...) is always ten fold the actual paint time.
-paint takes a beating from gravel/road debris etc and it fades
-once it gets nicked or faded, you have to touch up or start the whole process over

Pros:
-more color options
-looks different (may appeal more to some)

There are Four major compelling issues with Plasti Dip
-time
-cost
-anyone can DIY
-you don't like your results...it peels right off

I have three kids and two wives (one x) and don't have time for a PITA.

Flooded timber? Duck hunting is my deal. Hunting is where I draw the line on time...I take my boys so I don't get as much flack. It's been rough over here for years which caused me to take up Deer Hunting (something I never thought I would do). However, this year was an outstanding duck season.

anybody have a pic of a black LX with everything blacked out. I go back and forth. Some times i think the silver wheels look good with the contrast and do not want to paint them. other times i think differently. Same with the badges and trim. At times, i like the contrast on the black; other times, i think everything blacked would look good. I have been going back and forth on this for 2 years. . .

Pro - I think matte black looks awesome
Con - it cannot be cleaned well - not quite durable enough.
It is def. easy enough to remove and cheap enough to try it and see if you like it.

PlastiDip excels in this application. I have an aftermarket aluminum upper and lower mesh grill on my sedan that I coated with PlastiDip. One of the options from the mfgr. was powder coating. Everyone that has purchased that option (or self-painted them) has complained of chipping/flaking from pitting and minor impacts. Mine still looks great 6 years later.

Where PlastiDip doesn't work well, is in situations where you'll get scraping/glancing impacts (side moldings/bumpers etcetera). It will peel in these situations and is more difficult to touch up without the repair being apparent.

You can see minor areas where the aluminum is showing through but it's nothing compared to what I've seen on the PC versions...

I've had plasti dip on my 80/100 for about 8 months now. Still holding up great. Easy and cheap so even if it didn't last this long no biggie to me.

I've had mine on for ~7 months now. Looks new. Note my truck is parked in a garage both at work and home.
