Started up the rig today and got a P0116, Engine coolant temp circuit range performance.

Following the FSM shows potential T Stat, but Robbie replaced mine with an OEM from Dan when he did my head gasket a few months ago. So, I doubt thats it.

it also says potential temp sensor.

So I cleared the code and drove around a bit with no issues. I realize its a 20 minute delay to reach 95 degC on two trips (??). So I will keep an eye on it.

The secondary reservoir was just below the bottom line, doubt that would have anything to do with it, but I filled it with Red to the halfway point between the bottom and top line.

Gages all looked good and the radiator was just flushed and filled in November when my Head gasket was done.

So, I will monitor the situation and if it comes back I will check the sensor.

What I am curious about is that while going through the freeze frame data I also found the following message. " Fuel System 1 closed loop calculated load at 62.7%". I am not sure what to do with this if its good or bad. Not sure if it could have been there before the injectors and fuel filter were replaced or if it is fresh data. I erased it before thinking about looking for a time tag.

If someone knows a little more about the Fuel System Message, that would be great

Thanks,

Ken

Ken, the message means that at that moment when the freeze frame was taken the fuel system was in closed loop, meaning that the engine was warm enough for the o2 sensor to take over fuel mgmt. The calculated load was based on the MAP sensors input at the same time. So you were in closed loop and running at 63% of engine load when the frame was taken. Other sensors come into play in closed loop operation and load calculations, but I kept it simple. All of the info is normal.

Thanks Gary, Couldn't find anything in a search nor the FSM. So it is a normal messga emeaning that its running normal and nothing I should do with it.

And Dan, My good friend, I thought we had an arraingment. You were suppose to point your Shaman talents elsewhere.

Have a look at this

Thanks Rick,
I have taken a few more trips today and it has not come back. Buying that code reader was a good investment. I'll keep an eye on it.

Romer,

Looks like you might be in the same bind as I am. I posted the p0116 TSB to the site a few weeks ago and have contacted a local Toyota dealership to determine Toyota policy on TSBs. I'll post their response tomorrow from work. From what I read I am basically SOL.

I am in the process of buying a OBDII reader that connects to a Pocket PC (<$150). I plan to monitor the temp on every startup to see if the error is in fact real or an invalid CEL. (It is a 2 trip event) I'd be glad to forward all of my research. PM me if you are interested.

I see three paths:
1. Buy a new ECU >$1000
2. Buy a used ECU ?$
3. Reset the invalid error for $150

Dave

Used may not help unless you can get the right ECU used. You would have to make sure that the parts number is the superceded one. Ken you are jsut having a bunch of fun with your truck. Thanks for helping all us learn. later robbie

Thanks for the info. Drove a lot more today and no-recurrence. I am now carrying the OBDII reader in the rig, but consider this a nuisance rather than a problem even if it reoccurs

What does Toyota say?

Posting of a communication with Toyota ( I removed names etc...) read from the bottom to top:

Dave,

I have been gone for a few days so I apologize for the delay in my e-mail. Unfortunately, I am afraid you are likely out of any for Toyota assistance. The only possibility besides purchasing a unit at full retail would be to contact local wrecking yards and ask if they will look thru their ECU’s at the part numbers they may have in stock. It may be that one of these yards may have an updated unit in their inventory.

Thanks,

Thanks for the reply and information.

I do not have much technical car knowledge but I have a factory service manual and I have done a ton of research on this issue.

I fear that I might be outside of any coverage due to the fact that my vehicle is a ’97. Specifically, I have a ’97 Land Cruiser with 60,000 miles that seems to be exhibiting the behavior found in TSB EG003-97 MIL “ON”- P0116 set in memory (ecm). Both the thermostat and temp sensor have been replaced (with Toyota parts bought from your parts department) per the factory service manual and yet I still receive the check engine light (P0116) within 5 minutes on cold starts.

Unfortunately the TSB recommends replacing the ECM that I have 89661-60651 with a newer one 89661-60652 and as I understand the ECM alone retails at about $1,300.

Am I just out of luck?

Thanks,

Dave

...Toyota’s policy is to cover repairs that are related to service bulletins for the duration of the manufacturers warranty period. After a vehicle is out of warranty Toyota will occasionally make exceptions up to about 50,000 miles or 5 years but beyond that the customer is usually responsible. When Toyota does participate in repairs beyond the original warranty period it is usually a partial assistance that can be offered at the dealership level. If you have a particular bulletin that you have questions please let me know and I will see what I can do to assist.

I will probably be out of the office for the remainder of the day so please e-mail me back or give me a call next week with any additional questions you may have, have a great weekend.

Does Toyota have a policy on cars that exhibit problems that are covered by Technical Service Bulletins? Would repairs be considered similar to warranty work or would it be completely at the cost of the vehicle owner?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

The reason I mentioned Cruiserparts.net is that I was able to buy a tranny build in August 97 from one of his trucks. If that truck was assembled after August I think it would have the correct ECM. CP was more than helpful making sure I got the tranny I wanted as I insisted on a unit past a certain serial number.

The tranny was 750.00 which is way less than new so I think it would be safe to say you could save some cash with these people.
