Now, I love my dog (1.5yr old Akita, Shogun)....but we came home last night after being out for two hours and I see his wagging tail in the office. He was locked in there because he'd decided out of nowhere to chew a hole in my :princess:'s area rug in the living room ($1K up in smoke).

Well, he decided to try to show me who was boss. He chewed up my battery pack for my computer...and in the process knocked down my 4 manuals to my 40.....yep, 3-35yr old books (2F engine, f engine, chassis manual) all shredded into confetti....after I emptied ½ a bottle of bitter apple into him I'm really hoping he learned his lesson.

:princess: Why are you more angry about the books than the rug? I can buy you a new rug...i can't magically re-create these manuals...and it was super cool that they were the originals.

Grr. Still love my dog though.

Pics?

I'm thinkin' Akita=Outside dog.........

Had a shop dog once that ate 4 seat bottoms, a padded tuffly lid, a steering wheel and a corner from a dash pad all from customers FJ40s w/o tops sitting in the lot before we broke him from the bad ways...

At least it wasn't your homework!!!!!

PDF downloads in sig-line links -- It's a start at least.

Next time, get him a bunch of cheap toys - Mine learned to only shred cardboard boxes (empty)....

training

he is still quite young and that behavior may yet pass as he matures, but I think locking him up, keeping him away from things, etc is the wrong approach. Possibly some separation anxiety ---do you spoil and fuss over him? Probably needs a good dose of exercise at his age

Running him off the lead you may want to be mindful of other dogs/cats etc that may "interest" him

My lurcher will chase our cats and run around in the house and drive everyone crazy with bringing toys---an hour in the Forest and some frisbee and he comes home and curls up---good boy!

Not preachin at ya cause I understand the demands of life and its hard to meet a dogs needs sometimes, i like working/hunting/ sturdy type dogs but nearly all of them need to work/play/hunt --best you can do at least

he wont chew anything if he is worn out

The definition of true love?---lock your wife and your dog in the crate and see who is happier to see you when you get home :lol:

That Akita will have your back when no-one else would, a few books? meh

foo foo

if you get a foo foo you have to drive a Jeep or maybe a RAV, not worth it

I guess it could work but do you want a dog that will protect you from the Bear or one to throw at them for distraction ;)

Simple, Crate when your not there.

yeah, we used to crate him up until about a year ago....then he was good...this was his first episode of trashing anything....and he had his toys at his disposal. Almost as if he did it out of spite for being locked up....he's a smart dog...I don't put it past him.

one more thing chewed and he goes back to being crated. he'll learn one way or the other. i'll post a couple pics of what's left of my books.....he'll be pooping japanese for the next few days.

x2 on the frisbee in the woods thing. Sorry about the books but I hate, make that double hate, to see a dog in a crate. That s*** ain't right. How about a cable run outside?

Never a foo foo dog.....those are just treats for Shogun. :) He's an awesome dog...sweetest in the world...and would scare the living s#$% out of any bad guy that came by. I'm sure it's just a "teen age" rebellion thing...our breeder says it generally comes up with the breed as puppies, then around this age. We always have a ton of toys for him to chew on.

Myquestoyota...I don't love using a crate when we're not home (its actually not often)....but they're actually good for dogs, their own den...and he generally used to like having one...I just prefer him being able to roam around the house when we are out.

Akita's are very social dogs...and they don't do well being separated from the family....I'll have to step up his exercise schedule some more. I'd never let him turn into an outside dog.

I got over it pretty fast, just posted more out of the fact that I thought it was pretty funny to see that much shredded paper in the office. Wife was pissed about the carpet, but I could care less....easily replaced.

No truer saying than man's best friend....my dog is my sanity check...no matter how bad of a day I had i'm 100% guaranteed to have a dog with a tail wagging back and forth wildly.

thats great
my lurcher went through a short phase of it and only chewed new things ---yikes but he outgrew it but I learned to give him more exercise and it is a simple and free pleasure for me to get out in the woods with him---and get to take him in the 40!

That was one of my two selling points to the :princess: for getting the 40 in the first place #1....it's an investment...they aren't making them any more so it'll only go up in value....forgot to mention the $ that goes into them too. ;) #2 Shogun doesn't fit easily into the back seat of a sedan...but he'll look bad-@$$ riding with me in the 40.

i have a original copy of the 2F and F manual, maybe the chassis as well.
shoot me an email.
pups are pups, s*** happens. give him a big hug and move on. when he nears old age and the dreaded day you will not even care about this.

Thanks Crushers, email sent. In all honest I was on the ground petting and playing with him within 30 min of us getting home. I'm accused sometimes of loving that dog more than the :princess:...there isn't always a disagreement. :)

Sorry for your loss. I can think of more than once I've threatened my dog with cutting her paws off but the bitch is still standing....
