Is there a way to just replace boot without disassembling the hub?

ok Thanks. Are both CV axles exactly the same for DS and PS ?

You can clean and repack without disassembly.

But current CV boot is no good and the split boot must not be available

Rebooting is cheap at about $35 plus cleaning supplies, but a PITA to do right. By this I mean really clean out the old grease. Some use brake cleaner, which works but not well. I use both petroleum (soak in) and water based (rinse out) solvents, HP water and HP air. I recleaning the outer CV 7 times on average until solvent comes out 100% as clear as it went in.

Consider age and condition of front drive shafts carefully. For about $1K in OEM parts you can replace front drive shafts (CV's), diff seals, hub flanges, cone washers and snap rings. It fasters than just rebooting and yields a better ride.

Here you'll see the axle and hub flange has what I'd call average play/backlash. You can also see inner boot is leaking at clamp if you look close.

Here is new OEM front drive shaft, hub flange, cone washers. Zero play is so sweet!.

@2001LC May be a dumb question but do the hub flanges and axle deform at the same rate? Meaning, if I have slop between them could replacing just the flanges improve the situation? Haven't yet got eyes-on my axle/flange splines...

Hub Flange general do wear faster, it seems a softer metal. I replace flange & cone washers without new axle, and I do see some improvement (reduce play).

But I never replace axle without replacing hub flange & cone washer.

I replace hub flange snap ring, almost always.

Awesome, thanks for the insight.
