I installed pfran cv bands on my cruiser this weekend.i noticed today that the the two outer bands are leaking some grease now.how tight are u supposed to tighten them down?I didn't know if I might have over tightened them.

Mine also leak after install. I tighten it again and its tapped out. Better off keeping the Toyota one on. I just wrapped it up with some mechanic tape from Amazon. All good now
 
The grease on the outer boots is a yellowish thin grease. Is that normal?the inner boots is a thicker grease
 
Personally I just use the NAPA crimp clamps. If they weep, I just crimp a little more.

So I'd just try tighten what you have first. You may want to remove clamp and clean groove on CV and boot part that fits in groove, then re-clamp.

That looks like fresh or nice and clean OEM grease. Good stuff.
 
Not sure the size but they are McMaster-Carr bands and the clamps themselves can be torqued to ~35ft/lbs.


I had the aftermarket hammer type leaking on my 200 and ended up using worm-drive bands, which didn't leak. Assuming there's nothing underneath preventing the boot from sitting flush with the end of the CV I suspect you just need to tighten it a bit more.
 
Here is pic after I got home after work.i have moved clamp and the leak is in same spot just past the fighting screw.

Tighten them up.
I've been running the same bands from McMaster Carr without leaks for years now and it seems like the best way to go with any lift on the truck.
 
Use a socket wrench to sung down, screw driver is not a good choice. Try ~1/8 turn at a time. Unless you've debris under the boot/clamp, it should stop leaking.

If you go with NAPA clamp here are some tools choices.

Found everywhere. Works, but not great.

Work very well for NAPA crimp clamp. Has third leg that holds top of crimp in tight. Lack real power to easily crimp OEM clamps

I am running Icon extended travel shocks and SPC UCAs with a lot of lift.
I have tried most of the aftermarket bands and have a drawer full of crimp tools for them, but they all leak after a while.
The McMaster Carr clamps are the only ones that have worked long term.
 
Careful- not too tight on the clamp or it will damage the boot and cut it, so be careful how much tension.

100% agree with Napa clamps for a few reasons:
  • As close to OEM as you can find, and can be installed with out removing the boot or CV.
  • You can obtain the correct tension on the clamp by measuring the gap of the crimp ( PER FSM guideline) and using the tools shown by @2001LC
  • The Napa clamp is 7mm wide, and is the correct width for the groove in the boot. The worm drive clamp is slightly wider (9mm) and can damage the boot and not seat into the tulip groove if not perfectly installed.
  • Napa clamp is readily available at Napa stores, no need to pay shipping or wait for an online order to arrive.
