Agree with all of that, thats our cause as well, what you have mentioned, but a longer shock open, means a longer shock closed, so moving the bottom mount down technically has the same effect as moving the top mount up ;)

Heres a pic of todays project, giving ver 4' of flex, and road manners, with 38 x 15.5 20 tyres on 20x10 rims, with no bodylift, to keep it driving nice also, first test drive today on a similar vehicle.

Hmm those radius arms look a lot like Patrol arms :D

So um who's radius arms are those?

Oh so easy to fill in the blanks :princess:

Oh BTW Mark, you don't have a '97 FZJ80. You have a '97 LX450 pansy :flipoff2:

Hijack!! But funny, I had to post it.

LT uses the measure, what is that, 13 times? and cut once method. :D

I was simply trying to produce some "filler" material until he GETS THE PICS POSTED.

Waiting with baited "orange juice' breath.

Seven days from now (Saturday 1:00 AM PST) this truck has to be chained down on the trailer. The tow rig will be packed with all the necessary camping gear, spare parts, tools, welder and of course plenty of Oregon beer to share in camp. (Stop by for one!)

T minus Seven Days:

The trucks exterior is almost completed for prep to shoot the sealer and then the color. All of the flare holes have been welded and blended into the panels.

fenderpor3jd.jpg

The welded and blended areas get a light skim of filler and are sanded flush with a wet sand finish.

All the mask lines from painting the jams have to be removed and blended into the panels. Travis Winkler came over and helped even though his Moab project has a list still as well.

travpor8ow.jpg

Still I need to do a wet sand on the roof and the right side. I neglected to bag the whole truck when I shot the jams so any exposed area received considerable over spray. Fortunately it comes off with a wet sand and the window use steel wool with light lacquer thinner. Check out this window! (Ok yes gratuitous MT plug)

The shop is an absolute mess right now with all this grinding and sanding going on. Tomorrow morning all the body gear gets put aside and out comes the wrenches. Two maybe three club members are coming over to help jump pulling the front axel housing and building the new 94’ none locked housing with all the goodies. (Cro-mo inners and outers, ARB, 5.29 gears, fresh seals, etc.) Thanks to Boston Mangler for trading me the empty non locked for my empty locked housing. I looked over the locked, its do able to modify the housing for the non locked drop out, but this will be cleaner. The rear also gets the 3rd swapped out. The new 5.29 gear set for the rear is not setting up. We stopped at .180” of shims for the pinion, and it still did not set! Something is wrong with the new set of gears, I don’t think the 97’ LX drop out is off. Fortunately I have a set of 3rds both set up with ARB’s and 5.29’s I ran in my FJ40 that is no more. I will use the RD03 front set up and just swap the pinion flange over for the 80. This will work fine for now, then once I get the issue figured out on the other set up I will switch them over.

Time to head home for sleep and back down here early to meet the crew to kick the axels. Tempting to just sleep in the office tonight, would not be the first time.

More photos tomorrow.

dang...you're not done yet!!! comon man i wanna see this thing. :flipoff2:

well, time for me to get into mad panic mode and get a shifter setup, rear bumper setup, storage for crap, front and rear main seals.....

one week till moab:doh:

T – Six days before leaving for CM

Sat. AM LT, Chad, Jesse and myself tare in to the axles. Chad and Jesse tackle the rear and LT and I take the front.

Start of the day tare down the front

Bobby Long’s goodies for the front end:

Chad aka: LR_RESQ in the foreground (with his gansta stance) as he and Jesse pull the rear axles and hubs. Had one hub with two broken studs to R&R.

Jesse aka: Flip-flop removing the mounts for the front axle. Why I was off TIG’ing some parts for a shop moocher.

We set up the empty housing provided by Boston Mangler, from Eric V.’s truck on stands and built it as the locked housing under the truck was torn down.
LT aka: Green weenie building up a knuckle

Here is the shop moocher for the day…. Well sort of that is Travis Winkler who spent late last night helping me do more prep work on the body for paint. So he earned it! (Dude he ran all the wire out of the welder!) Travis has an 80, 40 and a now this “beater” mini, or so it was planed to be. Typical build for him, way nice.

travpor0fr.jpg

So here is the truck as of now.

nowpor1vw.jpg

The rear end is done. It is a FJ40 drop out loaded with 5.29 gears and an ARB. I swapped over the 80 pinion flange an we tossed it in. The front end is bolted in but not done. The brakes are open and most of the mounts are just loose. This will have to wait for now. I need to switch to paint mode again due to timing and a good block of warm weather to do the main paint job. Its 10:40 PM on Sat. Night so time to clean up the axle build mess on the floor and bust out the sand paper for a exterior wet sand. The truck will dry over night and be ready to paint tomorrow.

More to come!

Mark,
I get back to Portland Sunday night.
Ready to help out again.
Everyone will be in Texas, so I can roll out early a few days this week to get that 80 together.

Weather here is AWESOME:grinpimp:

OUTSTANDING! Can really use a hand putting all the trim and seals back on! Let me know if you need a ride out to the shop to get your 60.

Ige, you are going to do front and rear main seals this week? Man that is way to ambitious for me.
Gary
looks like i won't be. cold and snow this week :frown: and i still have a newly developed rear hub leak to figure out, t case shifter linkage to figure out, one more speaker to wire....etc. depending on nights, i might do rear, that only requires dropping transmission crossmember and complete exhaust to get pan off. from main i think will mean disassembling front end due to lack clearance for damper puller.

Warm day yesterday 72 perfect for painting. Chad came over and helped out finial prep and masking. Thanks to him I was able to shoot the sealer and color and get home on time. (try not to work Sundays away from the family, my wife puts up with a lot!)
