Anyone got good info and connections on a Custom Wiring Kit for an FJ40? Looking at redoing the entire harness for my 1966.

Saw those, but $1,400 is a bit much. Nice looking though. Ive seen other complete kits going for $400 and they just need to be laid out, taped up, and connectors added to the ends.

You mean these from JT Outfitters? I'd like to know who's making them for him. Note to self: stop by next time you're in Winston.

I haven't heard good things about the Painless harnesses.

FWIW, I don't think @Coolerman is making complete harnesses anymore, just pigtails. For sure, this is a marketable item, especially if someone can find a domestic source for Sumitomo wire.

There are so many threads on this subject. Just about any of the major brands will work, but you will have to change connectors to use stock switches, etc. Or just go with generic switches. If you are swapping to a GM style steering column, it can make a difference.

Use the search function and plan to spend some quality time reading. These will get you started...

Check the links here from the FAQ:

Here is @Coolerman 's website for great info and wire, connectors, etc.

Dakota digital has some cool modern stuff. You may check with ToyotaMatt on here.

You know that with a little pick you can change out oem connectors without splicing wire, meaning you could land a generic harness into your connectors or new oem ones if nec. The part I would save from oem harness until installing new wires would be the hazard/blimk/brake, I would isolate the power for those and put on its own circuit and leave the og wires that route haz/blink/brake.

I did the SOR kit on my 40. I also bought a connector kit separately with the extractor tool and replaced the spades on the original connectors and replaced the bullet connectors. Yes it's a pain in the a$$ but it really makes the ignition, turn signals, horn, etc easier to deal with.

Where did you get the connector kit?

You can still get most of the OEM Sumitomo connector housings from Toyota; the ones you can't get @ToyotaMatt can get for you. I've nver seen a kit, per se.

This is what I used and most of the original housing. The housing that were damaged I used the waterproof connectors listed above. My reverse light and some of the tail light connectors were trashed so I replaced them with the waterproof connectors.

As for a 1966 FJ40 goes .....

- the OEM YAZAKI original factory green tint sheaths hold up for SEVERAL decades to say the least , and beyond depending UV rays there subjected to , gas , oil , grease etc .....

- the SOLID JDM brass , and updated now TIN-PLATED marine grade versions offered , have the best possible corrosion protection on planet earth , especially the TIN-PLATED-SOLID-BRASS modern ones ,

- i have emailed YAZAKI japan recenty about a very recent artice i read that talked about a new STAINLESS STEEL BULLET set up from them , via and for YAMAHA marine JAPAN , but no response yet ?

- the ones below are STILL 100% MADE in JAPAN , and that matters most to me anyway , actually when it comes to any part fort my personal toyota family and shop mini meme fleet , MADE IN JAPAN matters most ... :D

- all of which will greaty reduce there A+ reputation and service life even today , i know someone reading this thread has a 1962- 1966 era 40 series of one type or another 45LV 45 P/U etc ... where a original Factory installed PLANT A11 oem yakaki Bullet connectors male and female remain in good sound service , and the original GREEN tint sheaths might be a tad yellowish-green but remain serviceable if unpluged and plugged back together if need be ....

- it's fair to say the multi-decades service life timeline is absolutly accurate on average , as the law of averages go , all things Vintage TOYOTA
parts and vehicals platforms ....

- if you think for a metric second your gonna get anything close to a viable product with a clear sheath and who knows what pho-plated shiny bling brass from a AMAZON link or made in CHINA Ebay 1000pc kit out there ? keep on thinking after those clear low grade silicon sheaths turn cloudy white and pussy looking faster then a H55F gear box can scoot ...

1966 would be very easy to layout and make it yourself using connector parts from coolerman and matt!
You can get the colored wiring you need as well to match!

If you ever had the tedious opportunity of building a custom harness, 1400 would be a deal. 400 might buy a generic harness like Painless but you'll spend 20 hours cutting splicing, lengthening, shortening and swapping plugs to make it look at all like it was built for the application. There's a reason the Painless Harness is jokingly refered to the Painful Harness. If you funded 50 at a time, you might get a harness builder to make them for 400. After building a 5.7 TBI harness in 1990, for my 40, I looked into getting a TBI harness built to market. There was a company in PHX that specialized in harness building. I could get 100 units at 175.00 ea. One was going to cost around 1100.00. If the numbers were there they would be affordable but the markey for a 60 harness might be 20 per year. @ Coolerman would know. If he says the market is there maybe
it's just waiting for someone to drop the initial cash and build 20 harnesses
The LS engine harnesses are so cheap now that you can replace them away with every tire change. Twenty years ago the were 400% more expensive but everyone wants
one so they're out there by the 1000s

This kit matches **some** of the plugs...

The one pin plugs fit my starter and carburetor (idle solenoid) and the three pin fit my horn relay.

The four pin did NOT fit my ignition switch or my windshield wiper motor.

(Those are the only one's I've tried so far, just to repair issues.)
