There is pebbly paint over the block number. Makes it hard to read.

Serial Number 0217605 on my '97 Troopie with the original 1HZ.

I wonder if they started a new S/N run with the newer generation 1HZ or the same S/N run through out production

I THINK it's 0057620. The last number could also be an 8.

Does anyone know where to look that up? I'll ask beno.

I've been wondering about that possibility.

The water pump's either not factory or at least has been off, it was on with just RTV, no gasket.

I got told once that the 1HZ was designed to repaired in the field without gaskets,it is a very user friendly engine.
If it wasnt leaking ,there maybe some truth in it.
Normally ,the pump has a plastic gasket with a ridge on it,I think they are called a "crush gasket".
The aftermarket waterpumps always have a metal impeller,while the OEM pump has a plastic impeller and the vanes are sharper.
Most of the aftermarkets pumps seem to perform ok,but I think from looking at the OEM pump,it will pump coolant more efficiently.
In oz ,its only about $30 extra for the OEM,so its a no brainer.
The 1st pump on my HZJ75 lasted 250000klms

Metal impeller. The pump is marked "NRW" which is a Chinese parts supplier. Wasn't leaking but there was a lot of RTV. There is a lot of metal on metal contact, pretty easy to seal it up.

So far this is a pretty easy engine to work on. You could do the timing belt in about 15 minutes once you know how.

Must be cold out there judging by the clothes? Ive been sneaking out to work on my cars and bikes at 6am until its warms up about 10 am.Then its back to the aircon or beach.

Can you get the OEM pump?

It was about 15°F (about -9°C). I had lots of layers on and a portable electric heater under the engine bay. I have an oil pan heater that I leave on overnight when it's cold out and it keeps the entire engine fairly warm, which makes it much more pleasant to work on.

Yeah, beno already ordered me an OEM pump, which comes with the gasket. He'll order the timing belt, idler pulley, cam seal, and some other stuff for me tomorrow as soon as we get a good date on the engine from Proffitt's.

Along these lines of thinking, is it possible to put earlier timing components on a later block/head/camshaft setup? The water pump is the same throughout the different iterations of the 1HZ. The timing components are not (for example, a 92 tooth timing belt vs a 94 tooth, hydraulic tensioner vs a spring loaded idler tensioner, etc).

Wondering if anyone has this type of info?

The S/N is still running with current production
My previous engine no 1HZ-0191749 year 96.

All underground mining 1hz powered landcruiser sat like this for the whole shift,as the gear boxes were locked in lowrange and had lock outs on 3rd 4th 5th gear or electronic cutouts at 30kph.

I believe so.A very experienced diesel mechanic told me if you do it,make sure you swap all the relevant components,meaning that you must have the correct gearing to run the pump and cam.
Does the hydraulic tensioner have its own mounting or will it attach to what the spring mounted tensioner attaches to?

Unless the holes in the block are different, even if the tensioner attaches differently all you'd have to do is replace the cam seal retainer plate with the proper one, which is trivial. It is what the tensioner attaches to.

So it turns out this is a '99 1HZ from a different mine truck. The engine in my '04 mine truck donor was badly rusted and unusable so Proffitt's pulled this one and installed it. Parts ordered, should have it fixed in about another week.

Exactly my thoughts. My engine might be pretty old. This doesn't mean it wasn't pulled from a '99 79 series - the mines swap engines pretty frequently....
