Is it smoking at all? Not sure about diesels but gas engines will have some white smoke sometimes if it's burning coolant. Usually the exuast smells kinda sweet like coolant too. (Not that you should inhale exhaust fumes! You can usually tell from pretty far away.)

I've had a smoking problem on cold starts that lasts about a minute for some time now. Always went away as the engine warmed up. It didn't smell like coolant, it smelled like unburnt diesel and/or burnt oil.

keep in mind it also is going to bubble if you have a lack of coolant somewhere in the system.

if you smell or see exhaust gas you will know you are deadmeat.

My smoking problem on cold starts will make that easier. How convenient.

"Smoke may not be Smoke".....One of the symptoms of a faulty cooling system or worse yet a cracked head is "white" exhaust which unfortunately is coolant leaking into the engine. The "white" smoke will often fade as the engine heats up and the crack shrinks as a result of the heat. I don't know if your smoke is this smoke as this condition can linger for weeks if the crack is small.
Good luck....

white can be unburnt fuel or coolant ...
USUALLY it is unburnt fuel while the engine is cold.
once warm then white can be coolant issues.

if it is a head gasket then either the oil level can be up and / or the coolant level will be down.

Toyota Red cures all ills.

Home. It's the water pump. HUGE relief. Rad is full, slightly discolored, no bubbling, big racket from front of engine, fan all loose after shutdown.

I can fix this in my driveway. Sorry about the alarm, but I've had the HG on my mind since it started smoking.

So check this, beno knew the part number for a 1HZ water pump, oil filter, and fuel filter from memory.

He had a lot of Canadians ordering from him apparently
Might as well do your timing belt since you have to take all that stuff off

Nah, he has just been following the thread and had diagnosed the problem before you did. He went ahead and wrote the number down. He was just waiting to hear from you.

Great news on the HG. Mine is being replaced as we speak (well, over the course of the next week, I suppose) and I consider myself lucky... worst case was a cracked head. Based on the way mine was leaking, and the fact that my HG looked good when the head was removed, I was a bit anxious.

Interestingly enough, Toyota has a few 1HZ heads available in America.

They're not cheap.

Tor from Torfab is doing the work up here in Seattle. He's a mud member and has a great reputation with Toyota diesels.

Parts are coming from American Toyota, too

I just ordered all that from him not too long ago;)

Ah...the pieces of the puzzle come together. :D

Parts went out yesterday to Tor.

The 1HZ HG is a work of art...a beautiful MLS HG.
