Hey Guys,

so I have a 72 fj40 I am restoring now and the wiring harness is just a mess. When I say it is a mess, I mean it. It has been hacked to the extent that is does not resemble anything OEM anymore. I got the truck to run using the existing harness but would like to find someone whom knows their stuff to build a new harness to my specs based on the parts in the truck I am using. Does this even exist? I know guys like painless are junk and would like to find someone to build one to spec if possible. I would be open to using different knobs for the heater, ignition switch etc vs. stock as all of mine are beaten up and basically junk.

I am very interested to see where this thread goes.. Specifically, the aftermarket or non-Toyota switches and relays recommended for ease of building out a painless harness.

I used the mini 21 in the last FJ43 that i wired from scratch. I was very impressed. Price is right and way better to deal with than any of the Painless systems that i have used. Comes complete with turn and hazard flashers as well as horn relay.

I wired everything to the Toyota switches, ignition, turn signal/high beam switch, and dash so everything looks and functions as factory.

Coolerman used to build custom harnesses - he still sells all the stuff, including connectors and correctly colored wires

and: Painless harnesses are not junk - they are just not made according to Toyota wiring philosophy, but can be made to work in a 40 - we did it in my truck :meh:

Did you check with Coolerman? He has a bunch of the connectors and at one time was going to make factory fit harnesses. I used a bunch of his parts plus a Kwik-wire harness to fully rewire my FJ40. Huge improvement over stock. I used an 8 circuit harness which is plenty for an FJ40.

Never heard that Painless was junk, just expensive for what you get. The Kwik-wire was very decent, not too expensive, all USA made, and worked out well for me.

Sent you a response to your message...
For those wondering I do not build full harnesses anymore, no time since I have taken over as president of my company.

I still sell parts and wire and even build some sub-harnesses when time permits. There will never be full OEM harnesses built for trucks past 1974 unless someone finds a source for those weird green connectors. ( I do carry the green alternator connectors and terminals: both the two and three pin versions) Toyota started using those weird connectors in I think 74.
Some of the weird connectors on 74-84 Fj40's I can get terminals for (like the plug in fuse block connectors, carb fan, fuel cutoff solenoid, manifold temp sensor and water temp connectors) regulator(old and new style), rear chassis harness(old and weird 6 pin), Cooling fan timer module.

I cannot find terminals for the Hazard switch, round gauge cluster connector and the emissions computer.

Hope that clears up some things for folks!

thx for this, good info......

I bought all the parts / pieces / wires etc from Coolerman and used a Blue Sea fuse panel. I'm really happy with how it turned out. You can build a harness yourself if you take your time and use a factory service manual (remember that not all FSMs show the white/black ground wire). If you build it yourself you can add / leave out whatever you want at this point, as well (dual batteries, extra wiring for comms like HAM or CB, extra lighting, etc).

I also am going with an EZ harness, 1) to have a modern fuseblock with the relays built in. 2) all new wires with modern heat resistant coating and NO CORROSION. 3) Every wire is labeled every 5 inches. Yeah it is going to be some work to get it modified, but seems like a much more reliable end solution.

another option,, if you are not going back stock the fj60 collum and harness work, pleanty of circuits and headlights are relayed.. takes a while to pull out what you dont need and mod the rest but they are usually free.... and the headlights, windshield wipers and key switch end up on the collum.. not the dash,,,
