Hey Y'all!
So I have an idea that I feel is a pretty good one but I need to know if anyone is even interested...
I am thinking about offering high-end handcrafted, wooden shifter knobs for your FJ Cruiser. They will not be comparable to your average knob. The idea is to create a shifter knob that is clean, classy, and on the luxury end of the mod options.
I personally want a shifter knob that fits and feels extremely comfortable in my hand. Not a metal one that gets too hot or too cold and is bland and boring. I want a knob that stands out and is essentially the "cherry on top" perhaps for my ride. A knob tends to be one of two things, boring, or exciting. In your average ride, you have a boring and uncomfortable knob. In your classy ride, you have the exciting and comfortable knob that really makes a statement and can be the perfect finishing touch to your vehicle.
The production of these knobs would be almost on a hobby size business scale and the production would be limited, unless the demand is high enough for me to increase the supply. Nonetheless, the quality would remain very durable and professional.
I would like to reinvest the profits from the knobs into finishing my own FJ40! So it's kinda like a FJ charity, right?
Although that all sounds great, I understand that there are many an "OEM Purist" who would find this idea completely disagreeable with their taste and style. I also understand that we have a lot of offroaders who want something rugged and not too classy. Something that won't be ruined if it gets mud and dirt on it.
With that in mind, I am offering up this idea and am open to discussion of details such as what kind of knob you would like, style, feel, size, etc. or if you are not even interested at all, please inform me all the same.
Ok, now for the fun part, some pics of a few prototypes!
*NOTE - these are unfinished knobs which I whipped up in a bit of a hurry. I want them to have a much shinier finish and cleaner overall end result as well as no tailstock indent in the top of the knobs from my lathe. As for the checkered knob, I have woodburned the logo by hand. If things go well with the knobs, I would like to invest in a cnc laser engraver that could do a much cleaner job and then I would offer custom designs for the knobs. The knobs are made of Maple and Cherry wood. These are not the only two designs I would be offering, so keep that in mind and lmk if you have somthing specific you're looking for.
Please let me know what you think!
(Don't mind my not so luxurious FJ which is currently undergoing a resto! haha)
