Daaaaam the body on that is clean! I'm like everyone else, keep the 92... I have a 91, and am currently elbow deep in a Vortec swap. But as for the rig if the tranny hadn't gone boom I'd have kept the 3fe... But FWIW these things are gas hogs, I can't say that I've seen anywhere on mud that anyone is getting better than 16mpg with a 3fe, I was only getting 5-8 (tranny I think was the culprit)

Not knocking the newer Cruisers because they are nice. The 80s were last years for solid axles. To me that's the last of the true 4x4's as they were originally designed. again all Cruisers are nice just the 80 was the last raw 4x. Your 92 is really nice. I wish my paint was half as nice.

They 'can' be good investments, but I'm guessing at least 75% of Mud members have a higher total investment value than they do resale value, especially if you consider labor.

A few lucky ones get to pick them up for cheap from someone that doesn't know what they have, or they get lucky and buy a built one for pennies on the dollar.

I agree that they'll likely continue to go up in value, but unless something crazy happens I don't think that growth will keep up with the never ending money pits that are LCs...especially when their owners have OCD. :flipoff2:

However, as far as my wife knows my '92 is a rare gem that oozes return on investment from every orifice. It makes it a lot easier to justify (and get approval for) spending money on it that way... :hillbilly:

You're correct. The next guy gets the score. I think the 80s will get up in fame although not as much as the 40. But keep in mind that the 80 is modern, is practical, true 4x and there's not really any vehicles out there that match. Maybe a Bronco....

I love my 91 3FE! Now that I'm getting ready to hit the big 5-0 I enjoy driving past the scenery, and being able to really enjoy it seeing how my 3FE is so slow!! Lol
But, other than being passed by the occasional moped, and getting a rock steady 10mpg, this engine (as well as entire driveline) is totally bulletproof! I have 220,000 on the ticker, turn my own wrenches, live a mile from the Atlantic Ocean in NC, and I wouldn't hesitate for even half a breath to go out and jump in it for a trip to Cali or Alaska or wherever. BY FAR the best set-up I have ever seen or heard of!!! Keep it and have fun!!
( but DO check it out, something is going on if your getting that bad of mpg)

As for values of the L.C. in the last two years i swear i have seen a 30% increase asking Price for some of the trucks . '93- 97' were asking 6-8k but now asking 8-15k for a stock truck with 200k+ on the motors.

better yet remove them all together!

Why? There's no power increase or fuel mileage increase to speak of....... better off to leave them on to help with back pressure in my opinion.

Unfortunately, i live in ca and desmogging or taking cats off is not going to work for me... checked the cat and its fine, looks like its mass air flow sensor. Problem now is sourcing one.

Tranny? They are supposed to be bomb proof

I had a clean 92' for 4 years. Loved it once I got used to the slow lane. Sold it bought a 100 - much more power but 4 years later.......... Sold because of my changing needs. Months later I really miss having and LC in the drive and sooooo I just bought a 96' PM'ing and a few bolt-ons coming. Really like the feel of a solid axle off road. In short I wish I had kept my 3FE and ran it till it dropped then dropped in the V8. Would have been ahead on $.

It's encouraging to read this stuff. I sometimes feel a little crazy when I try to explain to someone else why I drive a 25 year old truck.

is there really a need to explain ? - doesn't the fact these trucks are still on the road explain itself, when so many newer cars were already junked at, like, 100K miles or less ?

Get a trans temp gage the A440F doesn't like the heat!

Keep it. They are not meant to be fast. They are meant to go anywhere and forever. My 92 gets 10-12 mpg. Pick at this issue until you get it figured out then enjoy it.

Personally, I wouldn't put an LS motor in a Land Cruiser. Again. Been there. Don't mm me that. My biggest regret. It was no longer a Land Cruiser. But I'm a purest.

If I ever have the spare 20k AND the motor ever blows up AND my spare 3FE motor blows up I'd ship it to Slee and have them put a UZ in it.

I have a 92 (two if you count my son's) and a 93. Personally, I enjoy driving the 92 better.

Plus you can pour beer in the gas tank and piss in the crankshaft and it will run for another 50k...

Is that beer in the crankshaft and piss in the gas tank or other way around?

My neighbor bought one of those huge infinity QX80 suvs and complains about getting 10 mpg.
