Curious about why Nav to non-Nav?

Well, I understand the initial thinking; that there is less *stuff* to go bad. But I haven't read a lot of people talking about a crapped out Nav on their trucks. Also, I see Nav repair offered at $400. So I'm curious if this makes fiscal sense?

And are there many failures of the Multifunction Display?
 
Im some trucks, the climate controls are integrated into the nav. if the screen goes, its hard to change the car temp. Also, its hard to upgrade to modern nav in these trucks.

You are correct mostly unjustified internet hype. Cost to repair are way down from 10 years ago and rarely go bad according to one of the US largest Toyota service department.

For me it was a problem with the need to upgrade the Land Cruisers sound system but now owning a Lexus I dont have the need.
 
There once was this guy, who heard of a friend who read about a guy whose nav failed. But, it wasn't confirmed. Now rip out your electronics before they fail.

AHC is in the same camp. I think Land Rover (not a typo) is to blame for that. The old (okay, all) Range Rovers had a similar system that were notorious for failures and stupid high repair bills. The idea of a variable ride height got a bad wrap.

Temperature, fan speed, OFF and ON can be done with the display off.

The speakers and the amps break more often than the nav units. I don't NEED an awesome sound system, but the CD changer skips while playing tracks, and even if I kept any cassette tapes they would sound horrible because all of my speakers are blown. Without a proper Bluetooth A2DP solution, I don't have any music at all. So broken speakers, malfunctioning CD changer, useless cassette tape deck, no decent programming on FM ... it needs an upgrade. But then there's the whole climate control integration problem.

Lastly, who really buys a new navi DVD every year? One day they'll stop making updates. The DVD that came with my 01 is the original one :rolleyes: The best navi is on an Android/iOS device ... the head unit I bought is going to run Waze and I'm going stream (and cache) music over Spotify. I don't want a stupid navigation system to control my aircon
 
I'm curious. Whats the history about when the Nav display quits working that the AC push buttons still work or not work?
In other words, are the AC push buttons independent of the NAV module????
 
MFD has broke twice now on my '04. Such a horrible feeling when it freezes.

Buttons stop working completely. If you are lucky you had it on AUTO when it bit the dust, it will retain the last setting.

You can still adjust volume on radio and change audio sources via the physical buttons. You can also scroll through radio stations.

Other than that, nothing else works.

If the Auto temp is on and you just adjust the set temp up or down it will switch between A/C and heat depending on which direction it needs to go to get to your set desired temp. The fan speed adjusts accordingly (if there's a big gap in current temp vs. desired temp the fan sets to high and then slows as desired temp is reached). I have the nav system but I literally never turn the screen on except to adjust speaker settings (rarely). The auto-temp function takes care of all my climate control needs, so hypothetically if my nav did go out in wouldn't miss much except changing sound balance.

Although I hadn't read @n55luvr reply when I wrote this so I guess I'm completely wrong... Had assumed the external buttons would still work for climate even if display is out, but apparently not.
 
When the MFD dies it takes out the little glass panel below the MFD that has your inside and outside temps.It is not the same as simply turning off your MFD.

The associated temp buttons won't work.

That being said, it's possible there are different types of failure and some may not be as broad as the MFD issues I've had.

HI, quick question about the MAP, Dest, Menu buttons on the MFD. Im interested in buying a 2003 LX but these buttons (MAP,MENU,DEST) do not work. The DVD GPS/Nav reader under the passenger seat does not work and that is supposedly causing those buttons to become inoperable(Buttons are a function of the GPS). All other systems on MFD work with the other buttons AC/performance?etc. If I replace that NAV/GPS dvd reader will those buttons work again or could I have other problems with the MFD in the near future. Called the Lexus dealer no answer unless I bring it in.
 
Navigation on a 100 series is a deal breaker for me. This is a long term vehicle for me and electronics of that sort are not your friend long term. Here in Texas you cant go thru a summer with out AC and just the thought of the screen going out makes my heart sink. A complete unit is a small fortune if you can find one.
 
Haven't some folks on here swapped in manual controls for the climate system?
 
I've upgraded my 2002 to have Bluetooth which feels like such a major improvement over the cassette adaptor. With that said, the failure rate on these nav screens is so low I've stopped worrying about it.

Many other toyotas have the mfd fail (Prius) and there are a few companies who rebuild mfds with almost any issue.
 
Just one more reason the no NAV 01-02 are my favorite. This is not even a consideration.

I don't think that is entirely true. I am speaking from personal experience so MFD failure is a reality for me, been there done that... a couple times now. It's annoying and not cheap to fix. The huge number of shops out there that do the MFD repair should indicate this isn't just internet hype.

That being said, it really seems to be related to '04 models. I have never seen reports of an MFD failure tied to 05 an up. This is not unique to Just the LC/LX either. It's a big problem across the Toyota lineup in 04.

Sorry to hear you have had an on going problem but its not the norm.

Yes NAV repair shop are more popular now that every manufacture uses some type of NAV screen.

Fact - Talking with our local dealership that does ~50K repair tickets a year the failures are rare. Given today they can repair NAV for max of $600 normally less I dont see it as a problem enough to not buy.

Personally I have never meet anyone with a failure:meh: Not to say it does not happen but...
