Curious about why Nav to non-Nav?

less is more

Having said that I have experienced the pitfalls of mechanical style switches on my '99. The A/C and Recirc buttons eventually succumb to contact corrosion rendering the switches/contacts less and less sensitive over time probably due to where my rig gets used :D. And the fix is a new board which last time I checked is north of $600.

Haven't some folks on here swapped in manual controls for the climate system?

Not that I'm aware of. It can be done but its not for the faint of heart or wallet. Further, unless $3-4K is burning a hole in your pocket there are, IMHO, better mods/uses that have bigger benefits.

@beno, @cDan and I did the parts run down on this years ago and although I never pulled trigger it seemed like it could be accomplished. But it involves fairly substantial work on the wire harness side and the parts costs alone, at the end of the day, were north of $2k with no guarantee it would work.

Personally I have never meet anyone with a failure:meh: Not to say it does not happen but...

Pretty sure @Chrismanjs has Nav failure. ;) (Hey didn't that truck also belong to you at one point?:p) but yes it can be fixed....

I would love to find a 04-07 100 or even a 08-09 200 without nav. It has nothing to do with concerns over failure for me. It's all about upgraded audio, and a current head unit with apple carplay (or whatever options the future brings).

Worked perfect when I had it:flipoff2:

Again not saying it cant happen, just not enough reason for not buying one of the best vehicles built.

If NAV worries you go to the ford, chevy, and dodge forums:skull: and research problems on 10-15 year old vehicles:rolleyes:

Bring one in from Mexico. 99% of the UZJ100's come sans the nav dash. Some paperwork, translation if you're not fluent and a couple bribes at the border and you're in :D

I agree that why I bought an 06 LX470 (much better sound system) having owned a 06 100 series. I did upgrade so I can play apple devices and use 1/8" plugin audio devices.

Hawaii is also popular for non NAV 100 series.

I bought a new 2004 LC. At about 5K miles the NAV screen just froze then stopped working. It was covered under warranty. The dealer said it was a "known issue" and that it should be fine going forward. It was and i never had another issue with it.

Additionally, our transmission failed at 47k miles. It was also replaced under warranty and was also a "known condition." Something about water seeping into the air vent allowing a failure. There is actually a TSB on this issue. The replacement lasted for years until I traded it off for an LX570.

So yes, I experienced the two most common big ticket failures. Thank goodness they were both under warranty. I did not abuse the LC and never pulled anything with it. It had every maintenance item it ever needed and was flawless otherwise.

I am a former Toyota employee and never saw another LC NAV or Trans fail. Odd, I know but I just hit those two items just right.

I own both. my 07 lexus has the nav w integrated HVAC. the integrated HVAC sucks. you want to change the fan speed? you have to hit the climate button and then push the screen for the proper fan speed. on my 01, you just twist a knob. Same thing with getting into a hot truck and wanting it to blow max cold. on the 07, you have to push the down temp button 15 times to get it from 75 degrees to max cold. huge pain in the ass. Also, if the stereo craps out, you have to buy a reman mark levinson unit. I much prefer the older unit.

There once was this guy, who heard of a friend who read about a guy whose nav failed. But, it wasn't confirmed. Now rip out your electronics before they fail.

AHC is in the same camp. I think Land Rover (not a typo) is to blame for that. The old (okay, all) Range Rovers had a similar system that were notorious for failures and stupid high repair bills. The idea of a variable ride height got a bad wrap.

They can have my AHC when they pry it from cold dead hundy!

My 06 shares the same and I never use the screen for hvac. Push the auto button set the temp and forget it. Hit the defrost button on the face to clear any fogging and push agin and it goes to auto. Easy system and performs very well. Use your key push unlock twice and hold and it drops all windows before you get there so you wont melt waiting for you finger to get you to max cold. The climate control buttons on the bezel of the screen is all you need imo.

When I was looking to go back to a LC, I was looking for the 01 LX without NAV because it would be similar to the LC we liked, but also have the Levinson audio, a notable upgrade over the LC audio. In 02 the LX came standard with NAV, thus 01 was my focus year. However, the 01 that had everything else we wanted came hampered with the NAV. The NAV turned out to be more helpful than we anticipated in cross country trips, but eventually it started to get bogged down. Turns out the DVD player was going bad, and it struggled keeping up with the data in the v7.1 disk. It started giving weird routing, could only take a couple stops on a trip, and finally died and would not show the map. The other functions worked fine, e. g. stereo, HVAC. I tried a repair shop that some others used on ih8mud, and it worked again for about a year, and died again.

This time I went to ebay and found a GEN4 DVD unit and replaced my dead one. This has been great. I was able to update to the v13.1 data disk (using a Gen4 disk). The 01 lacked the voice commands and vehicle info connectors (mpg, miles to empty, etc), but the map worked and multi-point destinations and POIs worked well again - still working well.

In the past, I had reservations about the durability of the NAV and AHC. Now that I have lived with them, I no longer look to replace them. We still have the original AHC system, and have replaced the front shocks, but with regular replacement of the AHC fluid at 60K, it has been a very reliable and pleasing system for us. We have used AHC frequently in Low and Normal, occasionally in Hi.

I have found that dealers have been more aware of NAV and AHC repair and preventive issues than they were 10-15 years ago; and multiple options for repairs or rebuilts now exist. With my NAV issues, we ended up using a Garmin GPS, and then to Waze. Each has its own strenths and weaknesses, but on our road trips, all three would be in use to get max benefit of each.

The 100s are remarkably durable and the systems are designed and created to fit than durability pattern. There will be a few instances of problems, more commonly with the first model year for a feature. This is what let me to look for the 01/02, 05, and 07 models.

So I have been among those who were looking at options to replace the NAV and AHC systems when they broke down. However, I am now no longer in that camp, but will look for rebuilt or new replacement parts whenever the systems break down - which turns out to be rare. Now that I have added an 07LX, I enjoy the VVTi and VGRS features and the difference they make for the LX driving experience. The repair frequency is not nearly as bad as what I have experienced with other manufacturers, so in the long run, the 100 is a remarkably reliable vehicle. I have also found my well maintained LX will typically ride better than the "certified" used vehicles on a dealer lot.

What does not work on my cruiser is the navigation. I can still Adjust my AC from the screen and my Audio. As soon as I hit the nav button and a couple other buttons (I dont give a crap about) I just get a black screen. But My AC/Heat Still works and if I need the Audio screen that also works. I agree with a previous post that LC and all car navigation systems suck. Just use google maps on a phone. I will only have a problem if it causes my AC to go out. Till then who cares.

Sorry to hear but good to know you are still cool:grinpimp:
How would a mini iPad work/look velcroed to the factory screen?:hillbilly:

That would be a sweet future Mod. Something for the new year pretty tapped out for now ;) I like you set up. Would be nice not to have to hold the phone...

@Shwing installed a nifty cheap solution for the phone holder, if you don't mind putting a small magnet on your phone. It's also a nice solution if you have a handheld HAM. It works better in the 80 though due to magnet placement options. Magnets attach with 3M tape, so can be removed easily if needed.
