oz me old, thanks very much, but I did a fan belt. I was probably a bit light on the details, my apologies. The gauge pic was just to show what I saw out on the highway passing Yatala at 110 :grinpimp:

..unless you're talking mph 40 clusters ;)

Well oz me old I am. But I'm trying hard to save for a house so I'm not sure if my wallet is. Apparently it's an older resto by an older gent and his equally older old man :grinpimp:

No updates but I have plenty of time to think out here, so I have some questions. Not necessarily for this truck, but for a build I am planning.

The build will be an FJ45, dolled up like an early but running an injected 304/TH700, discs, air, steer and coiled front. Patina, but classy interior. I'm considering a 60 series axle swap [gaining enough width for Bundera, GQ/GU or 80 series coils], but for highway cruising I want to retain the 3.70's. According to this: http://www.apexgarage.com/tech/gear_ratios.shtml I should get 109km/h at 1800rpm which is pretty ace for an old bus like a 45!

So, regarding the 3.70's..

a] will they bolt straight into the 60 series housings?
b] does anyone have any alarm bells going off [is this a bad idea]?
c] can you install an air-locker on these early centres [or are they too weak]?
d] will the truck be too sluggish off the mark?

Things to note:

FJ45 3 speed manual ratios are:
1st 2.757
2nd 1.691
Top 1.000
Reverse 3.676

The TH700 ratios are:
1st 3.06
2nd 1.62
3rd 1.00
Top 0.70
Reverse 2.29

Also, in my search I discovered this lil gem..
http://www.toyota.com.kw/english/to...ser/history/html/history/models/spec_m40.html

Cheers, Dan

PS. Why is R in the Cruiser a higher ratio than 1st, but in the TH700 it's a lower ratio than 1st??

ah yes cult the lonesome nights working in the scrub i know them well, all kinds of plans of girls, motocycles, fortunes and most importantly old landcruisers come to mind when a fellas out beyond the black stump.
automatic!!! do not forget cobber that a 5 speed is a modern advancement on a fj45 (ask west aussie who is still caught in the romance of single speed transfer cases and column shifts hehe)

All this knowledge, and no thoughts on three speed diffs?

Haha west will never change!

Thanks oz! You're a bloody champion me old. This has certainly enlivened me :grinpimp:

I know you're a fan of manual trannies (Spanish cross-dressers?) but I want an auto. It'll be 90% on the road anyway.

I wonder if there's a set of overdrive transfer case gears available..?

Thanks again :cheers::cheers:

Me poor boy I for got your well over 6 ft and have a problem with ya knee's hitting the steering wheel. :)
Marks adaptors used to sell them in OZ but you can buy them stateside.

Yep, and short of gaining an inch or two with major surgery (the 45 not my legs) the only choice I have is an auto, a differently angled and shortened column and a deeper set of floor pans. Considering doing all three.

The 75 steering column is a few inches shorter with tilt adjustment and lifting the seats will help as well.

oz you're right, but I can't even bring myself to use a newer 1975+ 45 column! No, for me it will be a stock early column modded to join the stock steering wheel and a uni-intermediate shaft-steering box assy. at the other end.

Damn I'm getting pumped now! Gotta get the '69 registered first..

Oh that reminds me, a filmmaking friend needed an old truck for s short film. Naturally I volunteered my 45 and I tried to snaggle the lead role for myself. I lost out but the 45 got the job! Shooting in January. Hopefully it ends up a decent film. If so I'll post it here.

G'day Cult,

Please tell me it's not an Australian adaption of 'Christine'. That's all the world needs.....a film about a rusty 45 series LandCruiser that murders people and fixes its own dents.

Cheers,

Ben

Haha no mate, it is about a serial killer though. Not a bad little script. It's also got a '67 Impala, so I'm guessing the writer is a bit of a car nut.
