CT26 How to make it spool at lower rpm?

Dougal,
we have had this discussion before and it comes down to what i have experienced. that is all i can go by.

the 13BT is a nice engine but not the most fuel efficient but then all the Toyota diesels are real close in numbers. a couple mile per gallon doesn't make or break an engines desirablity.

cheers

Crushers:

I get 10PSI in 4th grear @ 2000rpm full throttle. EGTs climb up and I touched slightly below 1400F. I am going to reduce fuel.

humm, 1400F is pretty high for extended duration but for a few SECONDS i would not worry much.

better safe than sorry, try increasing the boost instead. both will achieve the same result...

That's more like what we were expecting.

Now we know you've got enough fuel to create boost and high EGT's you can feel free to explore other turbo options.

Crushers:

I reduced the fuel and increased the boost to 16PSI. EGTs have lowered a little and power is gone.

How would you compare 13B-T (manual) to a 1HD-T (auto transmission) for towing and 4x4?

Hulsty:

pre turbo. I have a thread in which I showed installation of the probe.

Dougal:

Which turbo should I look for?

How much boost do you want to run?
I sized the GT2052 for the 3B with a rough 10psi target. It can handle more but if you want to run above 15 all the time I'd go bigger to the GT2056.

What's the rpm limit on your 13BT? Do you plan to install an intercooler?

Dougal:

I would prefer cheap replacement. There are plenty of Toyota turbos and I would pick in those as they cost a lot less than Garret. i.e. any turbo starting from a 'CT'.

There is no room for intercooler.

14.5 PSI max.

For the cheap option, I'd recommend a garrett T25. Toyota's only suitable sized turbo is the CT12B, but you'll find a T25 both cheaper to buy, cheaper to rebuild and possible to interchange parts on (e.g. different size turbine housings and comp wheels).

okay back the boost off a bit to 14 psi and gently turn in the fuel a 1/2 turn at a time and go for a run.
you want 1200F post turbo or 1400F preturbo max EGTs.
once you score this then let me know how you feel.

Correction in my former post... Reducing the fuel has resulted in lower PSI. I get 12PSI and EGTs are a little shy off 1400F (when in 3rd gear revved to 3100rpm). I feel if I rev it more I will get even higher EGTs. I couldn't take the risk to revv it more.

At 12PSI the turbo also makes whining sound.

Note: I had shimmed the wastegate to produce 16PSI. Lowering the fuel lowered the PSI as well.

A totally different topic... What will happen if I use nozzels of a 1HD-T? i.e. replace P10 with P77?

I, too, am struggling with fuel/boost/EGT. I installed a boost controller and saw no difference no matter what I did. I finally blocked the port off on both sides (replaced the controller with a piece of bolt stock). No difference. The only thing that seems to matter is FUEL (this is a 3B). Turn the fuel up, boost goes up. I have it now set so that I get 12-14 lbs max boost and for short periods this is fine (then EGTs rise). I fix that with my right foot and an Aubers gauge connected to a very loud buzzer set at 1280 degrees. No need to waste any money on a boost controller that I can see. I put it back because it looks pretty :-) But I have it opened up 100%.

These are much hard to soup up than a modern diesel (add chip and forget it).

You mean much easier! Turn a screw, adjust some timing, much cheaper than a chip.

Bringing this topic back, my 13BT now has a 3'' exhaust, stock dump pipe, water to air intercooler and a pre turbo EGT probe.

Until yesterday I was running stock fueling with boost set to peak at about 14psi which was only just reached at 3000rpm.

Turned the fuel pump up just over 1.5 turns, WOOHHAAA it goes like a cut cat now!! I also increased boost to a maximum of 17psi.

Up a long medium grade hill near home from a stand still max EGT was ~640C pre turbo, holding the car at full throttle for aprox 40 seconds going up through the gears.

It builds boost lots faster than it previously did, on the way home tonight I will take more note.

I've done more mods, more boost and fuel, have seen 15psi by 2200rpm. Going to upgrade the turbo to one of gbentink upgraded units, hoping for 20psi under 2000rpm, he thinks 22psi by 1700rpm is doable!

I have one of gbentink's upgraded units on my 12h-t and sure, 22psi by 1700rpm is doable. Actually, it doesn't reach it under quick acceleration, but if you load up the engine on a long climb then it will hold this high boost down to 1700rpm. I've seen it on my engine on a dyno, but not found a hill big enough in my local area to really work it like this on the road.

And that included 450nm of torque at 1800 rpm too!, but from a 6 cylinder 12h-t, not the 4 cylinder under discussion in this thread.
