From what I'm reading so far I think we should look at a couple different events throughout the year.

Yes

Fossil Springs could be one - nice camping- creek - nice ride up for the southlanders - family camping - Plenty to see out there

Regardless of what comes out of this thread... Fossil springs is the CSC September event EVERY YEAR!

Are you suggesting 2 or 3 events in that message?

I'd LOVE to do it, but I think 2 events would be tough, there certainly is a way to combine the two styles between crawling and exploring in the same event if done logically and intelligently. In what you've just stated, October is our most opportune month with smaller chance of rain albeit still quite `warm' if done at low altitude.

``Base Camp'' always helps the wifes/families when there is a shower nearby. Don't tag me as the surburbanite as I'm happiest in the middle of nowhere, but as stated simply having good weather STILL doesn't make the wife a perfectly happy wheeler, to my demise it takes some amenities :( Just the nature of life.

I'm on the fence between Sedona and Crown King, but either are excellent options it sounds for said base camp.

I'll be really shocked if this isn't a repost- CSC 'Copper State Cruise'

Kinda catchy, eh?

But I bet your wife ain't into it, and neither is mine. There's no way in hell I'm getting her out to an event in the middle of nowhere with a chance of rain. Rain makes for miserable camping conditions. The wheeling doesn't really suffer but camping in the rain just sucks.

Before we had our daughter we used to backpack a lot. She can handle the weather just fine. But it doesn't matter what my wife likes or not, she has only wheeled with me 1 time in the last 3 years. What she doesn't like is dust and heat and bouncing around, so when I wheel it's just me and Zoe.
I wouldn't really want to camp anywhere in AZ below 7000' during summer months. I've done it many times, but it's not prefered and Zoe tolerates heat about as well as her mother.

no, it's called 'wisdom': you are starting to qualify for the Sheetmetal Gang :grinpimp:

:D

Hehe...that's my favorite...grin.

If you do spring, you'd probably want to wait till April, we could get snowed in during early March, and during a "normal" AZ winter, February can be wet. Like stated above my :princess:s wont be happy camping in the cold rain, hell I don't even like camping in the rain!

Fall works too, if we get up north the right time of year, you can catch the leaves changing.

I think we can do everything in one event, I think most people will come out to participate in one type of event, I think you're either wild or mild.

Happy Friday!

I wheel with this group because everyone has gotten past the wheel it, break it, fix it...wheel it, break it, fix it...mentality of the TTORA group. Am I getting old?

I knew I liked this group for a reason. Even if I had an old truck, I couldn't see tearing it up everytime I took it out. No, you're not getting old, just smarter.

Here are a few more names. Some not so region spicific:

El Corazon de la Arizona fiesta!
(The heart of Arizona Festival)

Lost Dutchman's Gauntlet / Lost Dutchman's Cavalcade / Lost Dutchman's Conclave

Copper State Cavalcade '07

Thank you Big D you just gave me an Idea for the navigational poker run/ralley I've been kicking around in my head.

"Lost Dutchman's Poker Dash"

Here's the premise for this one.

x amount of 2 man driver/navigator teams

7 waypoints scattered all over the FJ area (event locations can be moved from year to year)

At each waypoint is located a 5 gallon bucket w/ lid housing 52 playing cards in sealed envelopes and a log book for eack numbered team to log into. The last team to log their time at each bucket grabs the entire bucket to bring back to camp (wouldn't want to leave a bunch-o-buckets in the desert).

At start each team is given envelope containing all 7 waypoints. teams get 5 minutes to map points and decide on route to be taken.

team starts staggerd by 2 or 3 minutes

At the end of the day each team has a 7 card "stud" hand used to make the best 5 card poker hand. Hands are scored by a pre determined points system. the course would have a set completion time. Teams score additional point by finishing closest to the "official" course time, and are deducted point for finishing the course faster than the "official" time (this helps assure safe travel speeds).

Teams win random prizes based on finishing scores... blah...blah ...blah... you get the idea.

While Sedona and the trails we were on yesterday were indeed scenic, the constant traffic jams due to narrow trails and high volume of commercial traffic would put a severe strain on an organized event.

It also sems to me that Sedona wouldn't fit the 'something-for-everyone' bill.

Agreed - Sedona Is always a drive through to another location - when you have the chance you must head up Schnebly road to the top of the rim - it is on the way to Flagstaff and has the most scenic views and a few nice basalt trails.

As a local it is hard to be on any of the organized trails ;)
