Do we need to stop on the way and pick up a trail pass or is all of that covered in the registration fee?

Anybody wanting to ride on the trail system at URE on any motorized vehicle will need to purchase a pass for the days they plan to ride. Day Passes at $5/day can be purchased all at one time for any number of days you wish. Yearly passes at $30 are also available. More info here:
National Forests in North Carolina - Recreation Passes & Permits

Park access is free. No passes are needed to to enter the park or navigate the numbered or named forest roads.

Also please remember that there are many things to do at URE. There are dedicated horse and hiking trails, fishing, boating, swimming, etc...even motorbikes and ATVs are permitted . Keep in mind that only licensed vehicles are permitted on the numbered roads inside the forest. You will still see ATVs and bikes racing on them anyways, but they are breaking the law. There are multiple large lots with loading ramps and trailer turning space if you bring one of these toys.

Soap Box Time!!! The forest roads will be extremely dusty if it hasn't rained at URE in a week or so. It's very easy to lose sight of the vehicle in front of and behind you, let alone oncoming traffic on roads that can be barely wider than one lane in parts. Please use your headlights at all times when on those roads. Lastly, there were lots of flat tires on vehicles running full pressure passenger car tires last week when I was there. Each one that I saw and helped fix was caused by gravel. Consider having even just a cheap air pump and tire repair kit (and a jack, duh) if you are driving a car. I'm sure all of us already have those in our trucks, right? Rant over. :grinpimp:

Also, a few newbies have asked about, ahem...facilities...at the group camp. YES! There are bathrooms and showers right smack dab in the middle of it all! You might wanna have a roll of sh!t tickets in the truck just in case, though.

^^Thanks, JV!

The road to the camp site is a "normal" dirt road, correct? We are probably coming in two groups: daughter and I on THU in the truck, and Son/Wife on Friday, but in a Prius.

Wife asked about sheet tickets - - how much are they and do they cover everything needed? LOL J/K

Dogs are welcome, but need to be on leash?

Last year someone posted the gps/google maps location of camp. Can someone repost it here?

I could not agree more. However, having a CB is much, much better than having no radio at all, so we'll get them tuned up.

Speaking of, my CB could use a tune, so we'll add moonshine to the list of trucks requiring a tune up.

It's not too hard, takes maybe 30 minutes per vehicle assuming nothing is very wrong.
Please add me to the list needing an antenna tuning.

Anybody have a handheld I could borrow? Or a recommendation on something lower cost that would work till I get a permanent solution?

Lots of folks bring FRS as well, will work within a group.

Just a heads up as I was there last week. The camp A that usually holds the grill and a few vehicles backed in has had barriers put up. So you'll have to park by the dumpster towards the bath house. No more pulling up to you tent pad in that section.

Yeah, saw that. We're trying to decide if that'll change the layout for festivities or not.

EDIT: This really only affects the 4 or 5 of us who usually camped in Site A. We can still camp there, we just have to carry our stuff in the 50 - 200 feet.

There are plenty of spots in Group Camp for a truck with a RTT. You won't be able to use Site A, that's all. We reserved all 3 sites (A, B, and C).

Handheld CBs are available via amazon for pretty cheap:

That's probably the least expensive way to get into it and not a bad option.

I've got this one and have been really happy with it if someone wants a more permanent solution. Handheld or powered and a real antenna with no real installation trouble. This thing picks up more than my old dash mount one.

Yeah it shouldn't be too big of an issue, just wanted you guys to know. Might need to relocate the pig cooker as well.

For those looking for the Campground, just search "Badin Lake Group Campground" in Google maps. I submitted the request to Google last year and go it added so we wouldn't have to rely on longitude and latitude.

I purchased the Midland 75 on Sean's recommendation. This will be my first time using it Woot!

So how about it ...(maybe for next year since time is short) piece together a trophy for the most LR carnage. Anyone have a grenaded birf or other parts they can donate to the cause?
