OK, I scanned through the FJ40, 3FE threads, and I did not notice any conversation on the "drop-in" 3FE package that Cruiserparts.net is offering for $2,500. They make it sound like a real easy "direct bolt in " install. They make it sound like such an easy install compared to some other threads that I see on this swap. And it sounds pretty cheap. What am I missing?

I have been up there and seen one of their conversions in person, they seamed nice. I also know the owner is a good guy and he makes all the wireing harnesses himself. I am pretty sure if it was anything but 'bolt in' they would say so IMOP.

That does sound like a good deal. Did I read it correctly? It comes with the engine? I've been wanting to upgrade engines and that seems like a pretty decent option. I'd like to go diesel, but I don't have the facilities at my disposal to do a custom swap right now. (My old man owns a metal fab shop, but I moved and now its 400 miles away :frown:) This seems like something that could actually be done in a weekend. I'm also interested in any reviews.

I just looked thru the link, and what kind of warranty is on that 3FE engine?

Is it a rebuilt 3FE, has it been cleaned and painted, upgraded, new injectors, or has it just been pulled from a donor truck and shipped to you?

Having done two 3FE engine swaps in the past few months, My engines have been port and polished, new injectors, cleaned up, painted, and installed for far less than $1200 per engine Then you might have some labor on top of that.

And where did the engine come from? How much for shipping? Did it have a compression check done on it?? A lot of questions for a "simple" install. Do some research and I did MMW68's install's although he is near the 1200.00 mark on the installs he can drive them without worrying about what was done and if the work will hold up. Things to consider if you aren't doing them yourself. And yes there was labor on that 1200.00 tag he had. But not outrageous. :D

But that's not including the engine (core), correct?

The $2,500 price includes the 3FE in a "kit" for drop it installation. Not the actual installation. I doubt it is a rebuild-- wouldn't that be far more expensive? I assume that these engines must just meet some basic criteria for a satisfactory engine, such as compression. I'm sure that Cruiserparts can answer these questions, but I was just checking what others thought of the deal.

If you had someone do a good rebuild for you on a 2F that replaced the pistons cam lifters and all machine work assembled it would be that much or more so if you had a good shape 3FE it may be a viable option, most FI kits are near 1500 bucks or more and still require more work. Larry

that's more along what I was thinking:hhmm:

I picked up both engines for around 600 each add on the upgrades he had about 1200 into each engine. You won't get a rebuilt 2F or 3FE for that price. And BTW I think my installs look better than the ones on the link! :D

Here is my take on it: If you want to use the A/C compressor, it is NOT a direct bolt in. It is mentioned as $100 for the compressor. However, the motor mount will not work without a modification (ie welding). Without A/C you use the 2F passenger side mount and, yes, it bolts in. Power steering lines will change also (it moves to the passenger side). You will lose your amp meter (the alternators are 70 Amp) if it comes with it. There will most ikely be a problem with the VSS. This is REQUIRED for proper operation. You may or may not have a 4 pulse VSS. I don;t see how you can do it with no splicing but I haven;t looked to much into that. I will use the entire front end wiring harness for an FJ80.

That said, $2500 is an ok deal. But you will probably have some aggrevation. Nothing is ever "drop in". My 3FE with all accessories and only 79K miles, plus all the wiring, sensors, etc. will be far less than $2500 though.

See this thread for little tidbits that apply:

See this thread for VSS info:

And PS will look like this:

Did that include all accessories (PS, A/C, Alternator) the wiring harnesses (engine, main cowl, A/C, CC) and both VSSes?
