... I wouldn't waste my time on Fins. Fins just doesn't have anything challenging.

My opinion on Fins is that it's good for beginners with stock suspensions. Even I was bored 95% of the time. There was one climb with a bypass at the beginning of the trail that gave people trouble but my Hundy did fine on it. There was another long steep climb that about 1/2 the people attempted. I don't think I'd ever do Fins again. The pic below was me on the first climb that was a little challenging (for me). The 4Runner couldn't make it up the climb. But he had a manual tranny and open diffs. The last photo is what 80% of Fins is all about.

I would recommend Elephant Hill if it's available. If you want to have an easy run on one of your days that's a good one, given your experience and the abilities of your truck. It's not too challenging but I wouldn't classify it as easy either. There were several challenging spots and the scenery was fantastic. It goes through part of Caynonlands NP.

The CM12 registration web page is in testing phases now. I don't have a date it will open but the target has been the 15th. I'm not formally on the planning committee this year but still have access to the committee forum. I have not seen this years chosen trails but we normally do something a little different each year.

I would be up for joining a group for HITR whether before CM12 or October. Please keep me in the loop.

Hope to see you all at CM12

cool thanks for the update corbet! Looks like cruisemoab.com is back up but I don't see trail perdays and descriptions still refs 2011, more updates I'd guess? are the overnight s koko and san rafael swell?

Both overnighters will be offered. Kurt with Cruiser Outfitters is in charge and leading the Swell as usual. The route will change some from last year as usual. I don't know if Robbie has made any route changes to Koko.

Updates to the webpage are still on going.

See you guys there! I'm getting pretty pumped about my first ever Moab trip. Several guys from my club have gone down there somewhat religiously the last few years, it sure looks like it's worth the pilgrimage.

I'd camp at the campground directly behind Slickrock campground. Same cost, nicer facilities, no cottonwood in your food and close to the action.

That's the Portal Campground for reference. Much nicer approx same cost.

Ali, Looks like its Portal RV Resort? The pictures look nice on their site...$24 per 2 person tent site. In the past I've stayed at Apache Inn, not bad but I'd rather camp for cheaper:bounce:

Is KoKo a Wednesday overnight? I'd like to do that trail

Is KoKo a Wednesday overnight? I'd like to do that trail

Koko is a two night overnighter and starts on Tuesday directly from the trail head on the CO/UT boarder off I-70. Tech inspection is done at the trail head by the trail leader. You'll need to be able to carry extra fuel. If your going through Moab earlier in the week Tech could be preformed if someone is available but there will not be scheduled inspections done at SRCG until Wednesday.

Thanks! Also should have read 1 post further for Portal;)

well i was pretty excited... til discovering blown headgasket last weekend... :bang: and since i am strongly considering a nontoy drivetrain swap as opposed to redoing my 197k FZ, the timeframe is just more aggressive than i can pull off (or at least commit too in a week)...

if i go, it will be riding with someone or just on the beno plan.

A non-toy drivetrain in an 80 seems mighty ambitious. Why not just fix the blown HG? Or is this the impetus for the new drivetrain you've been considering for a while?

the latter for sure.

Ummm, let me think. Tobascofish thought about it. Bought a sweet Chevy engine. Put a lot of time and money into said engine. Then sold his 80.

Dan has been talking about a Mopar transplant into his. He just keeps talking.

I have seen a diesel dropped into an FZJ80, but it was a Toyota engine.

Clearly, if you want a non-Toyota engine into an 80 series you will most likely be treading on virgin ground. Replace the head gasket. Call it a day. Ash has done it. Onur has done it a bunch, and is probably only beat out by Robbie on the number of hg jobs. 80-series head gasket jobs are about as common as oil changes in 80's. The 80-series is the only Toyota I know of where replacing the head gasket is considered preventive maintenance. It will also let you easily replace the PHH while in there and killing two 80-series maladies at once.

a buddy here in Abq is putting a chevy 6.2l diesel in his 80. and he had a working FZJ engine. in fact, I think someone in the club here bought the engine. Beno? Ash?

He sold it to an unsuspecting co-worker of his.
