Pass your swell spot to a 100 series owner. I know several who were looking for one.

Sounds great Steve - should be fun!

Are you planning on driving the 4Runner or the 40? It seems like the 40 needed some work to get it trail-worthy?

I'm really looking forward to this trip! :bounce:

Yup it's the 4Runner again but... on 33's this time:cheers: Should be picking up the tires next month + a little TLC and we're good to go!

The 40:rolleyes: still needs some work, 1st needs a gas tank, then a new steering box, and ultimately a split case with gearing for crawling. Went to Fall Crawl last year @ Rausch Creek and ended up replacing the clutch shortly after;p

Just booked at Apache Motel...Getting excited:bounce:

We're getting close! Two weeks from Wednesday will be road trip day. :steer:

My plan is to leave early enough on Wednesday May 4th to get to Moab and get through tech inspection that afternoon, so I can get out and wheel first thing Thursday. In years past, I think we have met at the Puerco gas station about 7:00 AM. Anyone want to convoy? (This assumes heading west on I-40 to Gallup and then north to Shiprock and Cortez, etc.).

Also, it occurred to me that I have not seen trail assignments yet. Anyone have theirs yet?

Evan

I haven't seen the final assignment of my trails. I'm assuming I have what I signed up for. 7am at the Puerco gas station sounds fine to me. Should give us plenty of time to drive up and get checked in.

I don't believe that final assignment of trails has been sent out to anyone yet. I haven't seen it either, but on the RS forum it's discussed, and they're finalizing it...

Puerco at 7am is OK with me.

Not 550 to Shiprock and Cortez? Better, Faster or just different? Looks like it is the same mileage and time either way....

Hmmm...I could take Southern to Puerco and then south to the gas station:idea: Oh wait the wooptidos :bang:

Just got my trail assignments:

Thursday - Behind the Rocks

Friday - Metal Masher

Saturday - Kane Creek Canyon

Pappy's Trail Assignments:

Steve -

It's a coin toss. Some of the folks who are already north (Rio Rancho, etc.) head up 550. Mike, Jon, and I have been going I-40 to Gallup and then north, and it works well for us. You are welcome to join us or we can meet you in Moab or somewhere along the way. I don't recall if you have your Ham license yet? That helps with long-distance communication.

It all depends on ones perspective and where one lives. For Steve H. and Shawn US550 through Farmington makes more sense. For those of us along I-40 it's a faster drive through Gallup. There are a few pros and cons.

I-40 is faster than US550.
US550 is 4-lane to Bloomfield, where US491 is two lane Gallup to Shiprock. Get behind a slow truck and yer screwed. The 4-lane is also safer.
US550 is much nicer (scenic) than US491 (boring).
Driving from Bloomfield to Farmington is not quick.
Driving through Gallup is quick.

If you Mapquest my house to Moab it's 10 minutes faster to go through Gallup, but it's 17 miles shorter through Farmington. Driving up Coors, or Unser, to US550 from my house takes forever. Personally, I think it takes much longer than 10 minutes extra.

So, basically it comes down to personal preference.

edit: Evan beat me to it.

Plus if you have a vehicle built in the last couple of decades, I40 enables you to set the cruise control, roll up the windows, turn on the A/C, and listen to iTunes. The next thing you know you're ready for fuel in Grants & again in Gallup & more fuel in Shiprock & a fill-up in Cortez & then again in Monticello & then MOAB! :D

(Note to self: Remove the rack this weekend)

With the price of gas lately, this will NOT be a cheap trip!
